Your course includes opportunities for work placements, and your study will develop analysis, persuasion and communication skills in a broadened world view.AFTER THE COURSEYou will be prepared for a range of careers, including library and archival work, journalism, teaching, marketing and local government. You will also be well-placed for postgraduate study.

Modules

In the first year you will study introductory units to the various disciplines that you will cover on the course. These core units will offer you a chance to acquire an understanding of the history, culture and politics of the Americas as a whole. In the second and third years of study there will be a range of options so you can pursue your own particular interests. Options may vary from year to year but throughout the course, you will have opportunities to study in-depth critical and theoretical approaches to a wide range of subjects including race, slavery and emancipation in the Americas, USA civil rights, US foreign and domestic policy and US history from 1750 to 1877.

Our assessment methods for this course incorporate a variation of essays, reports, speech writing, some formal examinations, case studies, projects and presentations.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

Just 615 UK students graduated with American studies degrees in 2015, so it's one of the smaller subjects in terms of student numbers and has lost numbers in recent years. Most graduates stay in the UK once they graduate - quite unusual for graduates in languages and studies of overseas cultures - and about one in six go into further study, mostly to take Masters degrees in subjects like journalism, languages, teaching and law. Graduates tend to go into any general graduate jobs, in industries such as education, advertising, social care and media and publishing.
