Civil engineering is key to economic and social stability throughout the world. From roads and bridges to skyscrapers and airports, modern civil engineers plan, design, construct and manage the large-scale public works and amenities that underpin our society. WHY STUDY THIS COURSE? This course is accredited by the Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation, the Institute of Highway Engineers, the Institution of Civil Engineers and the Institution of Structural Engineers, which means that it meets all the academic requirements for you to be able to register as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and some of the academic requirements for you to become a Chartered Engineer (CEng). MORE ABOUT THIS COURSE The £100 million that the university has invested in its buildings and facilities over the past 10 years includes our environmental, materials, structures, hydraulics and geotechnics labs. We also have a full suite of industry standard software for Building Information Modelling (BIM). WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR? This course is ideal for anyone who would like to become a Civil Engineer with progression to Chartered status. SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE GAINED On this course you can do fieldwork on real buildings, take part in field trips in the UK and abroad and apply to do an optional year-long placement in industry which will put you ahead of the field when applying for graduate jobs. AFTER THE COURSE Working in the construction and engineering sector will make an interesting, challenging and rewarding career. There will be a wide range of roles within the construction industry open to you once you have completed your studies. Overall, you will be a versatile graduate who will have the employable skills to secure work in many areas of the job market.


During your first year you will study fundamental engineering principles and be introduced to the key theories upon which civil engineering practice is based. In year two you will extend your understanding and ability to analyse complex civil engineering systems. You will learn how to design and model the behaviour of complex structural elements, analyse the performance of soils and major construction materials as well as apply mathematical, probabilistic and numerical techniques to civil engineering problems and many more. Your final year will build on all the knowledge you have acquired enabling you to analyse, design and manage civil engineering systems in an integrated manner. You will also complete your dissertation on a topic of your choice.
