Course description

This four-level masters level degree offers the opportunity to select from a variety of topics, including electronic design, communications, software engineering, computer modelling and renewable energy systems. We also give you plenty of time in the laboratory to develop the design and fault-finding skills required of engineers. You will also spend your second year studying at the University’s Malaysia campus, following the same curriculum as students based in Nottingham, making this a unique engineering degree.


In your first year, you will gain an understanding of the principles and practices on which all specialisms within electrical and electronic engineering are founded. Practical and fault-finding skills are developed through laboratory and project work. In your second year, you will study on our campus in Malaysia. You will continue to improve your understanding of electrical and electronic engineering, and your design skills will be developed through a variety of laboratory-based subjects. In your third year, you can choose from a range of specialist topics to follow a wide path, or focus on specific technologies. You will also undertake a group project which examines the socio-economic and technical aspects of a major industrial endeavour. In year four you will be able to study state-of-the-art technologies taught by world-leading researchers and industrial engineers. You will also undertake an individual research project.

This is one of the more popular areas to study engineering and there is not quite such a serious shortage of electrical engineers as there is of other engineering subjects - but there's still plenty of demand. The most common jobs are in telecommunications, electrical and electronic engineering, but there is some crossover with the computing industry, so many graduates start work in IT and computing jobs. At the moment, there's a particular demand for electrical engineers in the electronics, and the car and aerospace industries, and also in defence, and salaries can vary across the country depending on the industry you start in. Bear in mind that a lot of courses are four years long, and lead to an MEng qualification — this is necessary if you want to become a Chartered Engineer.
