Production and manufacturing engineering

Our three-year BEng course equips you for a career in product design, industrial design or in the product development sector and has been developed to address the specific needs of industry to give its graduates the best possible chance of obtaining the career they want. The degree provides a firm understanding of design and the aesthetic and analytical approaches in developing new products.

Modules

The first year offers a broad foundation in engineering science and design, manufacturing processes, material selection and mathematics. Example modules include Creative Techniques in Design, Industrial Design and Dynamics of Mechanical Systems. In the second year, you will develop your design skills and commercial awareness and work on a group design project. Example modules include Computer Modelling Systems, Design Visualisation Techniques and the Second Year Group Design Project. In the third year you will continue to develop design skills through project work, including a major design project in the final semester.

Graduates are in significant demand, so unemployment rates are well below the national graduate average and starting salaries are well above average. Much the most common industries for these graduates are now vehicle manufacture - there are not enough people with these degrees to go round and so the big employers tend to take the lion's share at the moment. But pretty much anywhere there is manufacturing, there are production engineers. Bear in mind that a lot of courses are four years long, and lead to an MEng qualification — this is necessary if you want to become a Chartered Engineer.
