If you wish to study one language, choose from French, German, Russian or Spanish post A Level or German, Russian or Spanish beginners. If you wish to study two languages, choose from French, German, Russian or Spanish (post A Level or beginners) or Portuguese and Serbian/Croatian beginners. At least one of you two languages must be one of our post A Level languages (French, German, Russian or Spanish), as you may only include one beginners' language in your programme. Other language qualifications may be considered in the absence of an A Level. Please contact the University for further information.

Pass with 60 credits; 45 at level 3. Of the level 3 credits, at least 21 should be passed with Merit.

This combined honours course offers you the opportunity to study one or two modern foreign languages alongside a range of non-linguistic and business studies modules. The course is open to post-A level language students as well as beginners. If you are not studying a language at A level, you can study German, Russian or Spanish from beginners’ level to degree standard alongside your core Business modules. You will receive support and access facilities to develop your linguistic abilities alongside your business acumen and commercial awareness, incorporating a year abroad into your studies so that you will graduate with a wide range of skills and experience.

Modules

In year one you begin two structured language courses and are also introduced to the modern history and culture of the countries where your these languages are spoken. A third of your studies will introduce you to entrepreneurship and organisational studies. Continuing to develop your language skills in year two, you choose topics from a wide range of optional modules. A third of your studies will be in marketing and organisational studies. You’ll spend your third year abroad in a country or countries where your chosen language or languages are spoken. In your final fourth year you will continue to develop your language skills and study strategic and human resource management in the Business School.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

The number of business studies graduates fell significantly last year after a long period of increase. But there were still more than 14,000 degrees awarded and this is the third most popular subject for new graduates. Because so many graduates get business studies degrees, you can find them everywhere in the economy, and very few jobs are completely out of reach for a good business studies graduate. Around 40% go into jobs in finance, sales, recruitment, management (particularly retail) or marketing. There is also a small (but well paid) group who take their technical skills into computing and IT. Thousands of graduates from this subject go into professional jobs every year, and average starting salaries are above the average for all subjects and particularly healthy in London where they top £25k. Graduates with good degree grades in business studies are much more likely to get good jobs, so don’t be complacent, and keep a close eye on your grades.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

This is a broad subject for a variety of European languages. No matter which you take, the general theme is that some graduates go to that country to work, often as English language teachers, some go into further study, often to train as teachers or translators, but most get jobs in the UK in education - most often as language tutors, unsurprisingly, or translators. Modern language grads can also be in demand in business roles where communication and language skills are particularly useful, such as marketing and PR, and in finance or law. But remember — whilst employers say they rate graduates who have graduates who have more than one language, you need to have them as part of a whole package of good skills.
