Throughout this course, you will gain a solid grounding in the fundamentals of aerospace engineering, whilst also enjoying the freedom to specialise in the areas that most appeal to your interests and aspirations. You will study alongside world-class academics, and enjoy access to cutting-edge facilities. These include a flight simulator, wind tunnels, and the opportunity to undertake flight lessons to enhance your understanding of the world of flight even further. Furthermore, Nottingham enjoys very well-established links with industry, our strong ties with companies such as BAE Systems, Boeing, and Rolls Royce, mean our students enjoy a wealth of opportunity for work experience and career progression throughout the course and beyond. An accredited masters level (MEng) engineering course meets all academic requirements for professional registration and is the preferred choice for those wishing to become chartered.

Modules

All students follow a common programme of study for the first two years, studying core material that provides a solid practical foundation in engineering analysis and aircraft technology with hands-on design exercises and laboratory tests. In year three, you will work on a group design and make project, as well as choosing form a range of more specialised optional modules from within your chosen stream: general aerospace, aeromechanics, or aeroelectrical. At the end of year three, you will spend a year working in industry where you will gain first-hand experience of the exciting challenges that are faced by aerospace engineer, and significantly enhance your technical engineering and employability. During your fourth study year, you will undertake an individual project, as well as choosing from further specialised optional modules.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

Just over a thousand UK graduates got a degree in aerospace engineering in 2015. There are a few dedicated employers, unevenly spread around the country, and so there's often competition for graduates looking for their first job - which leads to a relatively high (although improving) early unemployment rate, and a good grade is particularly important for graduates. Sponsorship and work experience can be key if you're after the most sought-after roles in the industry. Starting salaries are usually good and graduates commonly go into the aerospace (yes, this does include manufacture of equipment for satellites and space operations) and defence industries. Bear in mind that a lot of courses are four years long, and lead to an MEng qualification — this is necessary if you want to become a Chartered Engineer.
