Course description

Marketing Management is for those that feel they either want to work in marketing, to combine it with another area of interest or who want to have an understanding of the marketing philosophy that exists in many successful organizations. It is geared towards developing your competence and skill as a prospective marketer as well as your knowledge of marketing models, theories and concepts. Economics underpins everything from world affairs and politics to wealth and poverty, national economic management and the functioning of business. This programme provides students with the opportunity to study a range of economic topics alongside another complementary subject. Study reflects contemporary economics both in the UK and overseas and students can select key areas of interest from a range of modules.

Economics Modules include: Micro economics; macro economics; analytical economics; economics of the real world; international economics; labour market economics; the developing world; the economic environment; the political economy of china. Marketing Modules include: Brand management; campaign planning; consumer behaviour; internet marketing; marketing management and e-commerce; services marketing; marketing communications; retail marketing; analysis of marketing/psychology relationships; e-retailing; professional consultancy project; marketing entrepreneurship; customer relationship management.

The marketing industry hasn't been as badly affected by the recession as many others, and so lots of graduates from all kinds of subjects go into it - with marketing graduates doing so more often than others. A lot of the jobs are in London, but graduates don't just go to work in advertising agencies. All sorts of industries do their own marketing these days, and with the rise of digital and mobile technology, a lot of marketing is done in quite innovative ways, using a wide range of methods. A lot of jobs in this industry are handled through recruitment agencies, so if you get in touch with them early, that might give you a headstart for some of the jobs available. But be careful – unpaid working is not the norm in the marketing industry, but it is more common than in most sectors.

Economics graduates normally do well in the jobs market, but as the finance industry has struggled, it's made for more difficult conditions for new graduates. As the industry recovers, we expect the statistics to improve. As so many economic grads go into banking and finance, it's not surprising that nearly half of all 2012's economics graduates who did go into work were working in London. It's quite common for economics graduates to go into jobs such as accountancy which require you to take more training and gain professional qualifications - so don’t assume you won’t have to take any more exams once you leave uni. The incentive to take them, of course, is better pay, which will be on top of an already healthy average starting salary of over £28,000 for graduates working in the capital.
