If you have non-standard qualifications or do not quite meet the admissions requirements for BSc Human Bioscience, The University of Northampton can offer you a fantastic opportunity to study a four year BSc Human Bioscience programme which includes a Foundation Study Framework that will help you develop the technical grounding and academic skills you need, in order to successfully progress to the full award.

The Foundation Year provides a practical and group-based approach to learning that supports your development and your transition to Higher Education, whilst introducing you to key ideas and skills used by Bioscientists. We are also committed to engaging you with specialist Human Bioscience modules from the outset, whilst extending support into your second year of study (Stage One).

Modules

**FOUNDATION STUDY FRAMEWORK:**

You will study two 40 credit modules that form the Foundation Study Framework. These are:

• Subject Studies 1: Practical and Study Skills – provides an introduction to key concepts, theories and principles associated with the area of study.

• Research for Practice – provides an overview of the principles of research, research methods and the learning environment of the University. It will also include an introduction to the academic languages of the subject and the learning experience of degree study.

These modules are delivered concurrently with two specified Level 4 modules from your BSc degree programme award map.

Upon successful completion of these modules, you will progress to Stage One of BSc Human Bioscience, in which you will receive further support through:

• Subject Studies 2: Working with Ideas – focuses specifically on the generation and development of ideas, building the key IT/ literacy/numeracy skill sets required by the programme.

In the remainder of Stage One, you will take four compulsory 20 credit modules from the BSc Human Bioscience.

• Pharmacology (compulsory)

• Genes and Genomics (compulsory)

• Bioscience Research Methods (compulsory)

• Processes of Life: Biochemistry (compulsory)

• Nutritional Perspectives of Health and Disease (designated)

• Techniques in Molecular Biology (designated)

**STAGE 3:**

• Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience (designated)

• Human Bioscience Dissertation (compulsory)

• Pathogen Biology (designated)

• Immunology and Health (designated)

• Integrated Medical Genetics (designated)

• Exercise and Sport Nutrition (designated)

• Health, Risk and Environment (designated)

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

The recession was tough on biology graduates, and although the jobs market has improved for them - a lot - it's still not back to where it was a few years ago. If you want a career in biology research — and a lot of biology students do - you'll need to take a doctorate, so give some thought as to where you might do it and how you might fund it (the government still funds doctorates for good students). A lot of graduates also take 1 year Masters courses to specialise in this wide and deep subject - most students take a standard biology course for their first degree and then specialise in subjects like ecology, conservation or marine biology later. Hospitals, universities, biotech firms, zoos and nature reserves and clinical and scientific testing are common industries of employment for biology graduates.
