**Why choose this course?**

On this specialist course, you will acquire the creative skills and technical knowledge you need for a career in footwear and accessory design, and the production associated with the broad area of fashion. We encourage you to be creative, experimental and innovative, and give you the opportunity to enjoy your craft and refine your skills.

Studying at the University of Northampton means you’ll be in the heart of a region which is synonymous with footwear, having a long and prosperous heritage of shoemaking. Northampton is also home to some of the most elite, internationally renowned footwear brands, some of which you may have the opportunity to work with during your course.

In your first year you will study creative leather applications at the Institute for Creative Leather Technology, as well as a being introduced to core skills and theory. In your second year emphasis will be placed on your creative potential and individuality. Your final year will culminate in a major project. Your work may then be exhibited at Graduate Fashion Week or our annual degree show.

We have close links with many local footwear and accessories brands, including Dr. Martens, Pittards and Church’s. In the past our students have been able to secure internships with them and many others!

Throughout each module there are opportunities to submit work for feedback. This will not contribute to your grade and will include group and individual feedback. We also encourage peer evaluation. At the end of each module there will be assessments that do contribute to your grade.

Want to work in a growing, creative sector where we are a world leader? Welcome to design! The UK has a proud reputation as a centre of design excellence, and last year just over 14,000 design degrees were awarded. At the moment, the jobs market looks a little better for fashion and textile designers, and not as good for multimedia or interactive designers — but that may change by the time you graduate. In general, design graduates are more likely than most to start their career in London, although that also varies by subject — last year fashion designers often found jobs in the North West, graphic designers in the South West, illustrators in the South West, East Anglia and Midlands, textile designers in the Midlands and the North West, and visual designers in Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Midlands.
