Access to HE Diploma

Overall 60 credits are required with 45 at Level 3.  Applicants must also have EITHER GCSEs in both English and Mathematics (at Grade B/6 or higher), OR must demonstrate achievement at Level 2 (GCSE-equivalent) by, for example, having 6 credits each in English and Maths.  We also consider other factors such as additional educational achievements, life experience and skills on an individual basis. Please read the A-level entry requirements for this programme and then look at the relevant set of Access requirements: For programmes requiring ABB: a minimum of 30 credits with a Distinction grade, plus 15 credits with a Merit grade, all in a Humanities-related subject. 15 of the Distinction credits should be in the pre-requisite subject required for A-levels. If you are applying to a programme involving History: all Access applicants will be required to produce a piece of written work, for assessment by the Admissions Tutor. Once you have applied, the Admissions Administrator will contact you with a list of topics/questions. You will be asked to choose one and produce a piece (1500 words) on that subject, for submission by the deadline given by the Administrator.

Cambridge International Pre-U Certificate - Principal

We consider applicants offering Pre-U Principal Subjects, or a mix of Pre-U and A Level subjects, provided a minimum of three distinct subjects overall is taken. Please note our A-level requirements for grades and any subject requirements for this programme.  Pre-U equivalencies will be: ABB at A level = Candidates taking Pre-U principal subjects in conjunction with A levels are expected to achieve a combination of D3, M2, M2 in the Pre-U and ABB at A level in three distinct subjects.

The University recognises the benefits of the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) and the opportunities it provides for applicants to develop independent study and research skills. Although the Extended Project will not be included in the conditions of your offer, we strongly encourage you to provide information about the EPQ in your personal statement and at interview. A number of our academic Schools may also choose to take your performance in the EPQ into account should places be available in August for applicants who narrowly miss the entry grades for their chosen course.

Applicants must demonstrate a broad general education including acceptable levels of Literacy and Numeracy, equivalent to at least Grade C or 4 in GCSE English Language and Mathematics (note that some degree programmes may require a higher grade than this - please see individual programme requirements). GCSE English Literature will not be accepted in lieu of GCSE English Language.

Modern History with Economics offers a flexible programme structure built around the study of modern history, economic history, economics and political economy. A key feature of the programme is the opportunity students have to develop and apply transferable skills drawn from studying related academic disciplines in history and the social sciences. Broad courses in history and economics constitute the core of the degree in the first two years, leading to more specialist options (in both history and economics/political economy) in Year 3, including 12,000-word independent research project.

**The course aims to:**
- Stimulate/extend students' interest in history, and to promote the critical study of the past;

- Introduce students to the basics of economics, and their application to contemporary and historical problems;

- Provide a broadly based and challenging curriculum offering exposure to the historical experience of Britain, Europe and other parts of the world since c.1500;

- Extend students' powers of critical analysis and logical argument by applying them to historical interpretation;

- Develop the interdisciplinary skill, in particular, of employing elementary economics to the formulation and analysis of historical problems;

- To develop wider appreciation of the applicability of a variety of theoretical approaches and methodologies through the study of specific historical courses and periods and to enhance students' powers of applying such methodologies for themselves;

- Develop students' capacity to communicate and present ideas lucidly in writing and orally;

- Advance the ability of students to work independently and organise their schedules of personal study;

- Provide the staff expertise and learning resources necessary to enable students to engage effectively with their studies;

- Produce graduates with the transferable skills that enhance employability, for postgraduate study in history and other disciplines, and for further training, namely: self-management of independent, goal-directed work; capacity to analyse and ability to undertake research; powers of application of a social-science theory to `real-life' problems; and the ability to communicate the views lucidly that result from study of a problem.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

History is a very popular subject (although numbers have fallen of late) — in 2015, over 10,000 UK students graduated in a history-related course. Obviously, there aren't 11,000 jobs as historians available every year, but history is a good, flexible degree that allows graduates to go into a wide range of different jobs, and consequently history graduates have an unemployment rate comparable to the national graduate average. Many — probably most — jobs for graduates don't ask for a particular degree to go into them and history graduates are well set to take advantage. That's why so many go into jobs in the finance industry, human resources, marketing, PR and events management, as well as the more obvious roles in education, welfare and the arts. Around one in five history graduates went into further study last year. History and teaching were the most popular further study subjects for history graduates, but law, journalism, and politics were also popular postgraduate courses.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

This is a degree in demand, as business increasingly needs workers who can examine and explain complex data. And yet the number of economics graduates fell by nearly 10% last year, which means demand is even greater. As so many economic grads go into banking and finance, it's not surprising that over half of all 2015's economics graduates who did go into work were working in London. And don't think it's just the finance industry that's interested in these graduates - there's a significant number who enter the IT industry to work with data as analysts and consultants. It's quite common for economics graduates to go into jobs such as accountancy and management consultancy which may require you to take more training and gain professional qualifications - so don’t assume you won’t have to take any more exams once you leave uni. And the incentive to take them, of course, is better pay, which will be on top of an already healthy average starting salary of over £30,000 for graduates working in the capital.
