Access to HE Diploma

D:30,M:15

60 credits overall in the Access to Higher Education Diploma, with 45 credits at level 3. Of those 45 credits at level 3, 30 credits must be passed with distinction plus 15 credits at merit. In addition, applicants should have GCSE Mathematics at Grade B (or 6 in the newly reformed GCSEs in England) and English Language at Grade B (or Grade 6 in the newly reformed GCSEs in England) or IELTS 6.5 with no component below 6, or equivalent. Where GCSE Mathematics/English Language is not at Grade B (or 6) then 6 credits of Mathematics/English must be taken at level 3 and passed with merit.

We consider applicants offering Pre-U Principal Subjects, or a mix of Pre-U and A Level subjects, provided a minimum of three distinct subjects overall is taken. We require you to achieve D3, D3, M1 over 3 Principal Subjects.

The University recognises the benefits of the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) and the opportunities it provides for applicants to develop independent study and research skills. Although the Extended Project will not be included in the conditions of your offer, we strongly encourage you to provide information about the EPQ in your personal statement and at interview. A number of our academic Schools may also choose to take your performance in the EPQ into account should places be available in August for applicants who narrowly miss the entry grades for their chosen course.

To meet our Maths subject requirements we require GCSE Maths at Grade B (you will require a Grade 6 in the newly reformed GCSEs in England) or we can accept GCSE Applications of Maths and Methods in Maths at Grades BB if studied together in the same sitting. Please note we do not accept Applied Maths e.g. WJEC Mathematics - Numeracy. To meet our English language subject requirements we require GCSE English Language at Grade B (you will require a Grade 6 in the newly reformed GCSEs in England).

35 points overall with 6,6,5 in Higher Level subjects. Students without GCSE/IGCSE Maths and English Language at Grade B (or 6) will need 5 in SL Maths (or Maths Studies*) and SL English (Language A: English Language and Literature or Language A: Literature). If Language B: English is offered at SL we would need you to achieve 6. *We do not currently accept Maths Studies for BSc (Hons) International Business, Finance and Economics applicants for the purposes of meeting our Maths subject requirements.

We normally require three Advanced Highers at Grades AAB or two Advanced Highers at Grades AB plus two Highers at Grades AA (plus Maths at Higher Level at Grade B). English Language and Maths not taken at Higher/Advanced Higher must have been achieved at SCQF level 5 (National 5 Grade B / Intermediate 2 Grade B / Standard Grade General level Grade 3).

We can only accept Scottish Highers in combination with Advanced Highers as follows: two Advanced Highers at Grades AB and two Highers at Grades AA plus Maths at Higher Level at Grade B. We normally require three Advanced Highers at grades AAB or two Advanced Highers at grades AB plus two Highers at grades AA (plus Maths at Higher Level at grade B). English Language and Maths not taken at Higher/Advanced Higher must have been achieved at SCQF level 5 (National 5 grade B / Intermediate 2 grade B / Standard Grade General level grade 3).

The University welcomes and recognises the value of the Advanced Welsh Baccalaureate and usually requires two A-levels or equivalent to be included within this. The minimum grade required will normally be the same as the lowest grade listed in the A-level entry requirements.

This interdisciplinary course offers you the opportunity to study a wide range of course units across finance, accounting, economics, business analysis, innovation, strategy and political economy. You will study the technical tools and techniques required to measure and assess business performance, while also emphasising the importance of changing economic contexts. You will also have the opportunity to learn a foreign language as part of your degree.

**Aims**

This course aims to offer you an inter-disciplinary social science perspective on business that is strongly informed by leading contemporary research and which introduces you to competing and complementary perspectives on business issues.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

The number of business studies graduates fell significantly last year after a long period of increase. But there were still more than 14,000 degrees awarded and this is the third most popular subject for new graduates. Because so many graduates get business studies degrees, you can find them everywhere in the economy, and very few jobs are completely out of reach for a good business studies graduate. Around 40% go into jobs in finance, sales, recruitment, management (particularly retail) or marketing. There is also a small (but well paid) group who take their technical skills into computing and IT. Thousands of graduates from this subject go into professional jobs every year, and average starting salaries are above the average for all subjects and particularly healthy in London where they top £25k. Graduates with good degree grades in business studies are much more likely to get good jobs, so don’t be complacent, and keep a close eye on your grades.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

Over 2,000 students graduated with a degree in finance in 2015, and a sign of the strength of the finance industry, numbers are on the up. Over half of finance graduates go into the finance industry, with accountancy and financial advice roles particularly popular. It's also quite common for finance graduates to go into jobs which require you to take more training and gain professional qualifications — finance graduates who take further study are more likely to be studying accountancy than finance. About a third of graduates start their careers in London - but Glasgow, Manchester and Birmingham are other popular locations for finance graduates to work.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

This is a degree in demand, as business increasingly needs workers who can examine and explain complex data. And yet the number of economics graduates fell by nearly 10% last year, which means demand is even greater. As so many economic grads go into banking and finance, it's not surprising that over half of all 2015's economics graduates who did go into work were working in London. And don't think it's just the finance industry that's interested in these graduates - there's a significant number who enter the IT industry to work with data as analysts and consultants. It's quite common for economics graduates to go into jobs such as accountancy and management consultancy which may require you to take more training and gain professional qualifications - so don’t assume you won’t have to take any more exams once you leave uni. And the incentive to take them, of course, is better pay, which will be on top of an already healthy average starting salary of over £30,000 for graduates working in the capital.
