Main entry requirements

A level

Grades A*AA-AAA including Mathematics.

Scottish Highers

Grade A in Highers Mathematics and grades AAAB in four further Highers subjects with a scientific bias. The Highers must be taken in one sitting.

Scottish Advanced Highers

Three Advanced Highers at grades ABB, including Advanced Highers Mathematics, to be taken in one sitting. Two Highers in different subjects can replace one Advanced Higher subject (not Mathematics).

BTEC Diploma

We consider the National Diploma for entry provided it is in IT or Engineering with grades DD in combination with a grade A* in A level Mathematics or an alternative of grades D*D in combination with a grade A in A level mathematics.

BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma

We consider the National Foundation Diploma for entry in any subject provided it is in combination with two A levels including Mathematics.  Entry requirements are based on achievement of the full National Foundation Diploma with grade M plus two A levels at grades A*A including Mathematics or an alternative of grade D in combination with grades AA at A level including Mathematics.

BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma

We consider the National Extended Diploma for entry provided it is in IT or Engineering with grades DDM in combination with a grade A* in A level Mathematics or with alternative grades DDD in combination with a grade A in A level mathematics.

International Baccalaureate

38 points overall, with 7,6,6 - 6,6,6 in Higher Level subjects, including Mathematics.

Course description

The Computer Systems Engineering programme delivers a degree course that will equip you with the knowledge and skills to develop computer-based systems with real-time response. Sophisticated electronic systems permeate all aspects of life. Typical examples include MP3 players, games consoles, mobile phones, vehicle control systems and radar. All of these are embedded systems, which typically contain one or more microprocessors, memory, a communications capability, application-specific hardware and software. Consequently a wide range of knowledge and skills are needed to support their development, including digital electronics, software engineering, computer architecture, and digital signal processing.

This is one of the more popular areas to study engineering and there is not quite such a serious shortage of electrical engineers as there is of other engineering subjects - but there's still plenty of demand. The most common jobs are in telecommunications, electrical and electronic engineering, but there is some crossover with the computing industry, so many graduates start work in IT and computing jobs. At the moment, there's a particular demand for electrical engineers in the electronics, and the car and aerospace industries, and also in defence, and salaries can vary across the country depending on the industry you start in. Bear in mind that a lot of courses are four years long, and lead to an MEng qualification — this is necessary if you want to become a Chartered Engineer.
