Entry requirements
A level
A level Mathematics grade A A level in relevant language required for advanced level, no language required for beginners level. Applicants must have studied Mathematics at Level 3 within 2 years of the start date of their course. For applicants from England: Where a science has been taken at A level (Chemistry, Biology or Physics), a pass in the Science practical of each subject will be required
Access to HE Diploma
45 Level 3 credits in graded units in a relevant Diploma, including 39 at Distinction and a further 6 with at least Merit. 15 Distinctions are required in Mathematics. A level in relevant language required for advanced level
Applicants who offer the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) and meet our offer criteria will be made the standard offer, plus an alternative offer. This will be at one A Level grade lower plus a grade A in the EPQ, for example the offer would be ABB or ABC plus A in the EPQ, to include A level Mathematics at grade A and A level in relevant language at grade B for advanced level
GCSE/National 4/National 5
GCSE Mathematics and English at grade 4/C required. Applicants with equivalent qualifications or who do not meet these GCSE requirements will be considered on an individual basis according to their circumstances.
International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme
33 including 6 at Higher Level in Maths, and 6 in relevant language for advanced level
Leaving Certificate - Higher Level (Ireland) (first awarded in 2017)
including Mathematics at H1 and relevant language at H2 for advanced level)

Scottish Advanced Higher
Including A level Mathematics grade A. Relevant language required for advanced level, no language required for beginners level.
Welsh Baccalaureate - Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate (first teaching September 2015)

About this course
Our Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences offers students a flexible and exciting way to study through its innovative Honours Select degree programme. Honours Select gives you the opportunity to design a degree that’s tailored to suit your specific interests, academic strengths and career aspirations. You can choose to study one or two subjects from a wide selection of more than 30, and decide for yourself how much weight each subject has. This Joint (50:50) programme combines Mathematics with Languages in equal measures.
This programme is accredited to meet the educational requirements of the Chartered Mathematician designation awarded by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications.
Most Honours Select combinations allow you to adapt the weighting of each by 25% after the first year, helping you to keep your options open. Please note, however, students studying either a Business or Economics pathway in combination with another subject cannot increase from 25% to 50% or from 50% to 75% and it is not possible to transfer from a 50% to 75% Law. This is a broad subject for a variety of European languages. No matter which you take, the general theme is that some graduates go to that country to work, often as English language teachers, some go into further study, often to train as teachers or translators, but most get jobs in the UK in education - most often as language tutors, unsurprisingly, or translators. Modern language grads can also be in demand in business roles where communication and language skills are particularly useful, such as marketing and PR, and in finance or law. But remember — whilst employers say they rate graduates who have graduates who have more than one language, you need to have them as part of a whole package of good skills.

Top job areas of graduates
Want to feel needed? This is one of the most flexible degrees of all and with so much of modern work being based on data, there are options everywhere for maths graduates. With all that training in handling figures, it's hardly surprising that a lot of maths graduates go into well-paid jobs in the IT or finance industries, and last year, a maths graduate in London could expect a very respectable average starting salary of £27k. And we're always short of teachers in maths, so that is an excellent option for anyone wanting to help the next generation. And if you want a research job, you'll want a doctorate — and a really good maths doctorate will get you all sorts of interest from academia and finance — and might secure some of the highest salaries going for new leavers from university.
