The earth surface system is dynamic and diverse, with changes driven by the interplay of physical, chemical, geological and biological processes in a wide range of environments.
Drawing on the complementary expertise of staff in geology and physical geography, this integrated degree programme provides a clear view of the controlling processes that link landscape evolution with environmental change and natural events that impact human activity.
Fieldwork in Years Two and Three at Liverpool is designed specifically for this degree programme integrating geology and geomorphology. Students have academic tutors from both disciplines in Years One and Two.
The first two years of FF68 (MESci) are shared with the BSc programme. The final two years provide a wider choice of taught modules and a comprehensive fieldwork programme. In addition, you have the opportunity to design and undertake a major individual research project that will provide you with skills in analysis, synthesis, problem solving, and reporting. The unique range of skills that MESci Geology and Physical Geography students develop make them attractive to employers in the geotechnical and resource exploration industries, as well as the environmental monitoring, surveying and planning sectors.
This degree is accredited by the Geological Society of London, satisfying the requirements of Fellowship and Chartered Geologist status.

This programme is available with a Year in China. The Year in China allows undergraduate students the opportunity to spend one year at our joint venture, Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU), following XJTLU's BA China Studies degree classes. XJTLU is a fully English-speaking university, located in Suzhou. If you wish to study this programme with a Year in China please put the option code YC in the Further Choices section of your UCAS application form.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

The market for geologists is has been quite linked to the oil industry for some time now, and the drop in the price of oil has meant the industry has stopped recruiting as many people for the time being. Geologists are still in demand, though, so the main effect has been to reduce the opportunities - and salaries - for geologists working abroad. At home, the oil industry remains a big employer, and so are the mining, civil engineering, construction and consultancy industries, with geology graduates working as geologists, geophysicists, civil engineers and environmental professionals.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

There are two options for geography studies: the one we're talking about here is physical geography (there is also an option for geography courses with a more human or social steer). Like a lot of sciences, quite a few graduates in physical geography — about one in five — go on to further study, mainly for one-year Masters courses, and not just in geography, but in environmental sciences, conservation and in courses where we don't have enough graduates like planning and surveying. And in the world of work, graduates often go into environment, surveying and heritage work - and teaching. These are well-rounded degrees that help graduates get a range of useful skills and so careers such as marketing, business analysis, sports and management are also popular and it's often easy to convert or retrain once you have a geography degree.
