Sports coaching

The Sport Development and Coaching degree draws upon contemporary research aimed at helping students to develop their expertise and ability in a range of academic and vocational activities. These can include coaching on school and community-based projects, exercise prescription and fitness testing, as well as developing, managing and evaluating sport development schemes This multi-disciplinary degree is underpinned by high-quality scientific research and field investigations. There are strong links with national governing bodies of sport and a network of local schools and sports clubs. The programme aims to produce independent and informed practitioners through engagement with a range of practical, laboratory and field-based experiences, alongside more traditionally focused lectures and interactive seminar activities. Students have access to specialist sport physiology, biomechanics and psychology laboratories in the Human Performance Centre, as well as a range of sports facilities and fitness equipment which are provided by the University’s Sports Centre.

Modules

Year one aims to introduce students to areas of study such as the sport development environment, physical literacy, sociological issues, and the foundations of sport and exercise science. The first year also includes core modules such as the Fundamentals of Teaching and Coaching and Research Skills, both of which are developed in years two and three. Students have the opportunity to tailor their learning in year two by choosing from a range of optional modules, such as Physical Activity and Health, Performance Analysis, Psychology of Performance, and Project Management, all of which can be developed in the final year of study. The dissertation in year three represents the final stage of a student’s learning on the degree. Students can undertake independent study on a topic of their choice and can develop key thinking skills, such as critical analysis and evaluation. As the options often reflect staff research interests, they may alter over time due to staff availability.

Assessment methods

The way students will be assessed on this course will vary for each module. It could include coursework, such as a dissertation or essay, written and practical exams, portfolio development, group work or presentations to name some examples. Throughout this degree, students may receive tuition from professors, senior lecturers, lecturers, researchers, practitioners, visiting experts or technicians, and they may be supported in their learning by other students.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

One of the fastest growing subjects in the country, the number of sports science graduates went from under 3,000 in 2003 to over 10,000 in 2013. Numbers have fallen slightly since 2015, but we still have over 9,000 graduates in the subject. However, the good news is the country's appetite for good health and fitness - and the adaptability of graduates in the subject - means that sports science grads are less likely than average to be out of work. Sports science graduates, not surprisingly, tend to get jobs in sport, fitness and health - coaching and teaching especially - but they're found all over the economy. Management and business are also popular options for graduates from this subject — and sports science graduates are particularly found where drive, determination and physical fitness are an advantage.
