About this course
The BA (Hons) Film and Television Studies degree focuses on academic study in both film and television, complemented by practical and creative projects in television production, film and scriptwriting. The course provides a research-informed introduction to the theory, practice and social significance of film and television. This programme is 75 per cent theory and 25 per cent practice-based. This course is taught by academics and researchers active in film and television, and offers access to some of the best production resources in the UK.
Modules
Students will have the opportunity to learn and develop through lectures, workshops, seminars, group projects, screenings, research and an independent study. In the first year, this degree provides an overview of the theoretical aspects of film and television studies and an introduction to film and TV practice. In the first year of the degree, theoretical aspects of film and television studies are introduced, as well as textual analysis of Film & TV products, film production and scriptwriting and TV studio production. The range of optional modules in the second year and third year aim to develop students own specialisms and enable them to pursue areas of particular interest. During the second year, students also have the opportunity to take part in an exchange programme with one of our partner universities in Europe or in the USA. In the final year, students complete an independent research study and a creative production project in film, television or scriptwriting. Some programmes provide you with the opportunity to focus your study in a particular area through optional modules. Timetabling arrangements may limit the availability of some optional modules to some students. As the options often reflect staff research interests, they may alter over time due to staff availability.
Assessment methods
The way students will be assessed on this course will vary for each module. It could include coursework, such as a dissertation or essay, written and practical exams, portfolio development, group work or presentations to name some examples. Throughout this degree, students may receive tuition from professors, senior lecturers, lecturers, researchers, practitioners, visiting experts or technicians, and they may be supported in their learning by other students.
