At Leicester, all our degrees are accredited by the Professional Engineering Institutions, so you can be sure that youâ??ll be getting the best quality teaching. We are ranked 7th in the UK for Engineering in the 2014 Guardian Guide, and our world-changing research also directly informs our teaching so you will be taught by highly skilled experts with a passion for the subject. This course gives you the opportunity to study abroad for one year in one of our partner institutions in for instance Florida, New York, Oklahoma, Ohio or Melbourne. You will gain vital experience in an international setting, which will allow you to apply the skills you have gained in your studies so far and will also enhance your final year studies when you return to Leicester to complete your degree. A year abroad will seriously enhance your CV, and will maximise your employment prospects in the competitive graduate job market. We prepare our graduates for a successful career in their chosen field â?? the first year is common with other engineering degrees, which ensures that our students receive the depth and the breadth of knowledge, skills and understanding demanded of a professional engineer. All our courses are influenced by the needs of industry. Visiting engineers deliver teaching in lectures, seminars and the laboratory. You will also learn how to conceive, design and implement solutions, working in teams and presenting your ideas to professors from engineering industries. Engineering at Leicester has an excellent, well-established reputation. You will study in one of the most iconic 20th Century buildings of any UK University, in a department with over 50 years of academic heritage. Our excellent links with the professional world mean that you could have opportunities to visit industrial partners from your project work, and work with engineers in these companies.

Modules

First Year: This year provides a broad engineering foundation. You will be introduced to the fundamental principles of mechanical engineering, electrical and electronic engineering. There are courses in mathematics and mathematical modelling. Second Year: Modules start to move from general foundation towards specialised ones. You will gradually develop specific expertise and skills in Mechanical Engineering. Third Year: In the Third Year, you will spend approximately 25% of your time on an individual project in an area that you choose as being particularly interesting.

This subject has been affected by the recession and so you would normally expect some more encouraging stats – although things have improved this year. Nevertheless, engineers are in demand across multiple industries, but most stay in engineering, particularly in the oil industry, and in the car industry, in design and manufacturing. Jobs are all around the country, with Scotland and the South East the most likely places for a new mechanical engineer to find work at the moment – starting salaries for mechanical engineers in Scotland are actually higher there than in London, thanks to the oil industry, and only bettered by a handful of courses. Bear in mind that a lot of courses are four years long, and lead to an MEng qualification – this is necessary if you want to become a Chartered Engineer.
