History

This is for you if you want to delve into the past and understand how the movements, ideas, and people that shaped the past are still affecting the present and informing our future.

Modules

In first year, you will study core modules on medieval and early modern history, and on modern history, to provide a strong foundation for your degree as a whole. In second year, you will continue to mould your degree around your interests and strengths, choosing from a wide range of option modules, as well as developing a greater understanding of important ideas and theories of the discipline. You will develop your critical analysis and team-working skills, and greater research and problem-solving skills. For third year, you can spend it studying abroad at one of our partner institutions (eligibility is dependent on your academic performance in Years 1 and 2). Alternatively, you can opt to continue studying at the University and complete your degree in three years. Please note that a year spent abroad still incurs a tuition fee, but this is much lower than for a normal year at Leicester; please see our website for further details. In final year, you will specialise in the historical topics that interest you most. You will study a detailed Special Subject reflecting the particular research strengths of your tutors and write an original dissertation on a topic that interests you. The dissertation is written with expert guidance from your supervisor. For further details, please see the course page on the University website.

Assessment methods

Assessment is through exams and coursework comprising long and short essays, source analyses, group projects, and both group and individual presentations. Approximately two thirds of your final degree mark will be based on your coursework; one third on your exams.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

History is a very popular subject (although numbers have fallen of late) — in 2015, over 10,000 UK students graduated in a history-related course. Obviously, there aren't 11,000 jobs as historians available every year, but history is a good, flexible degree that allows graduates to go into a wide range of different jobs, and consequently history graduates have an unemployment rate comparable to the national graduate average. Many — probably most — jobs for graduates don't ask for a particular degree to go into them and history graduates are well set to take advantage. That's why so many go into jobs in the finance industry, human resources, marketing, PR and events management, as well as the more obvious roles in education, welfare and the arts. Around one in five history graduates went into further study last year. History and teaching were the most popular further study subjects for history graduates, but law, journalism, and politics were also popular postgraduate courses.
