This is for you if... you want to build a broad base of engineering knowledge, taking modules from the full range of engineering subjects.Professional engineers have a high degree of specialist knowledge but increasingly they use a broad approach to problem solving across a range of engineering disciplines. This is coupled with an awareness of environmental, social, legal, economic and regulatory aspects of the problem at hand. Unlike some other universities, Engineering at Leicester has always been viewed as a unified subject and all engineering research and teaching staff belong to a single department. This has significant advantages for our graduates who leave here familiar with a broad range of topics and techniques in electrical, electronic, mechanical and software engineering. While this is an advantage to all our courses it provides a special quality to our General Engineering degrees. You will take control, computing, management and courses from the electrical, mechanical and other streams. These are carefully selected to provide overall coherence and balance, ensuring a good foundation for interdisciplinary projects in a wide range of professions. A degree in General Engineering is particularly recommended if you are considering a career in biomedical engineering, engineering consultancy, control engineering, sensors and data processing, patenting or a non-engineering profession.

Assessment methods

You will be assigned a personal tutor who will be on hand throughout your course to offer advice and support on personal matters, provide guidance on course choices and help you appraise your own work.

For the practical aspects of the course you will work, with a partner or as part of a small team, in our well-equipped engineering labs. On your third year project you will work individually with an academic member of staff.

Continuous assessment of your experimentation, computing, design and project work will contribute about 30-50% of your overall mark, with the rest based on your performance in exams for each module. You will also be expected to give presentations about your work.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

As a mixed subject within engineering where students get a chance to learn from a range of disciplines, this course isn't taken by as many people as some of the more specialist disciplines. Demand for engineering skills is high, though, and so unemployment rates are low and the average starting salary was a very healthy £26,400 for 2015 graduates. Graduates are able to specialise enough to be working in jobs in engineering — especially in design and development - as well as engineering project management. IT and management consultancy were some of the more common jobs outside engineering. Bear in mind that a lot of courses are four years long, and lead to a MEng qualification — this is necessary if you want to become a Chartered Engineer.
