A-Level Chemistry required. ABB will be considered for applicants studying Chemistry and a second science (Maths, Physics, Biology). AAB will be considered for applicants studying Chemistry and no second science.

2 AS Levels accepted in place of 1 A-Level, must be alongside 2 further A-Levels including Chemistry.

Access to HE Diploma must be in a relevant science subject, require a minimum of 45 credits at level 3, 30 of which must be at Distinction. 15 Level 3 Chemistry credits must be passed at Distinction. If A-Level Chemistry is not held an additional entrance exam will be required.

Cambridge International Pre-U Certificate - Principal

D3,D3,M2-D3,M2,M2

D3/M2/M2 will be considered in Principal Subjects for applicants studying Chemistry and a second science (Maths, Physics, Biology). D3/D3/M2 will be considered in Principal Subjects for applicants studying Chemistry and no second science.

ABB at A-Level including Chemistry, plus obtain Grade B in the EPQ.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme

30-32

with a minimum 16/17 points at HL, including grade 5 in HL Chemistry. The lower offer is considered for students studying Chemistry at HL, and a second science at HL (Maths, Physics, Biology). Minimum of 4 in HL Maths, or 5 in SL Maths, or 6 in Maths Studies required if grade B/5 not held at GCSE.

Leaving Certificate - Higher Level (Ireland) (first awarded in 2017)

H2,H2,H3,H3,H3

including H3 in Chemistry and Maths.

BTEC must be in a relevant science subject. If A-Level Chemistry is not held an additional entrance exam will be required.

This course is for you if you love chemistry and want to get first-hand knowledge of the chemistry needed in forensic science, with a view to a career in that field, or a related PhD.

Assessment methods

Teaching is a mixture of lectures, tutorials, exams, lab reports, essays, oral presentations, poster design and problem based learning. A typical week might include nine hours of lectures, seven hours of lab work, and two or three workshops or tutorials. You will also be expected to spend several hours each week on private study which might include answering problem sheets, preparing for tutorials or writing up lab reports.

You are assessed on your performance through exams at the end of the semester or at the end of the year and through continuous assessment throughout your modules.

NB. All lab work is continually assessed - there are no practical exams.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

The statistics here primarily reflect the prospects for forensic science graduates - they make up over three quarters of the group. While there are not a lot of jobs available in forensics itself just at the moment, reflected in the overall unemployment rates for forensic science graduates, there are still jobs for graduates from these subjects as they learn useful analysis techniques that some employers can find in short supply. Last year's graduates went into analysis work in labs, technician roles and general research, and for those looking a little wider, business roles and management also employed forensics graduates. Some graduates join the police with this degree and that can be a good source of sponsorship and work experience.

Chemistry graduates are in demand from a wide range of industries, from the food, oil, chemicals and pharmaceuticals to consultancy, technical analysis and teaching. They're also prized by business and finance employers for their research and data handling skills — anywhere there is research and data to be explained, you can find chemistry grads. If you want a career in research, you need a doctorate, so start planning now if you fancy one of these exciting and challenging jobs - but good students can usually get grants to take a doctorate, so don't worry about the financing if you think you have what it takes.
