Learn practical skills, engage with material culture, think critically about the past, and develop a unique long-term perspective on human, animal, and material worlds and their relevance to the present.

Modules

In first year, you will study the archaeological past from the origins of the human species to the 20th century, learning the aims and methods of archaeology along the way. You will also gain practical experience in a wide variety of archaeological skills. You will be able to take part in a local archaeological field-school. Recently we have run fabulous field-schools at Bradgate Park, with archaeological sites from the Mesolithic to the historic period, including the Tudor mansion of Lady Jane Grey (England's nine-day Queen), and the Iron Age Hillfort of Burrough Hill. During your second year, you will study core modules in fieldwork, heritage skills and archaeological theory. The Heritage Skills module will enable you to gain experience of the heritage sector. In addition you will be able to choose five option modules covering different archaeological periods and specialisms. At the end of your second year, you will undertake fieldwork on either a University of Leicester project or a project of your choice anywhere in the world (subject to approval). In third year, you can spend it studying abroad at one of our partner institutions (eligibility is dependent on your academic performance in Years 1 and 2). Alternatively, you can opt to continue studying at the University and complete your degree in three years. Please note, a year spent abroad still incurs a tuition fee, but this is much lower than for a normal year at Leicester. See our website for details. In final year, you will specialise in a topic that interests you for your dissertation. In addition, you will have the opportunity to take a module in advanced archaeological fieldwork, plus option modules in a variety of subjects. For full module details please see our website.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

Want to do a job in the arts - with lots of the great outdoors? Try archaeology! There don't tend to be many archaeology undergraduates out there (just under 700 graduated in 2015) - but it's quite a popular subject at postgraduate level. In fact, over a quarter of archaeology graduates take some kind of further study when they graduate - usually more study of archaeology. When you look at the stats, be aware that junior jobs in archaeology are not always well paid at the start of your career, and that temporary contracts are not uncommon. Thankfully, though, unpaid work, whilst not completely gone, is less common than it used to be. The archaeology graduates of 2015 found jobs in archaeology, of course, but also management and heritage and environment work, as well as more conventional graduate jobs in marketing and the finance industry.
