The BA (Hons) Business Management (Marketing) with Foundation Year is aimed at students who have an interest in developing knowledge and understanding of the key aspects of business management and marketing, and in particular, who are looking to pursue a career in business management and marketing. It seeks to give students a learning experience that allows them to develop proficiencies that create effective managerial behavior in different organisations in today’s changing business environment. The curriculum and learning and teaching strategy are complemented by guest lectures and ‘live’ workshops to promote independent learning and increasing their employability skills for the future. This knowledge and skills will be further developed and expanded in the years following successful completion of the Foundation Year.

The degree programme is designed so that the Foundation Year provides an underpinning year, incorporating both academic and work/professional related learning, for applicants needing to improve their knowledge and understanding of business and its related skills. The year provides students with knowledge and understanding of the key aspects of business management along with the necessary skills needed to participate in the undergraduate business programmes at levels 4, 5 and 6.

The Foundation Year seeks to develop numeracy skills with the aim to develop students’ business mathematical knowledge and skills in a way which encourages confidence and appreciation of mathematics as a subject and provides students with the mathematical background necessary for business studies at undergraduate level. The Foundation Year also offers a literacy skills module that is designed to support students entering Higher Education at Level 3 wishing to progress to a bachelors in business.

Year 1 provides you with a good understanding of the foundations of business alongside the fundementals of marketing. Years 2 and 3 gives you a thorough grounding in the more specialist concepts and applications of marketing management. In particular students will be exposed to the relational nature of marketing and build an understanding of the primacy of the customer in the digital world. The programme provides the intellectual underpinnings required for a career in a rapidly changing work environment, a rigorous approach to self-awareness and personal development and a significant exposure to the world of work and its current demands through work experinece opportunities.

The degree is ideal for those interested in a future career in Business or a career in Marketing. The programme offers students a thorough grounding in business and the more specialist concepts and applications of marketing management. Students will be exposed to the relational nature of marketing and how strategic marketing planning and marketing communications can aid the success of the organization in the international context. Students will have an opportunity to qualify for the CMI Level 5 Extended Diploma in Management and Leadership and gain an exemption from the Chartered Institute of Marketing for the Level 4 Marketing module within the Certificate in Professional Marketing. This is a good opportunity to develop the skills that are required to become ready for the workplace, while gaining a formal qualification and building a skills portfolio that you can show future employers.

The emphasis in the course design has been to provide this strong business degree with a focus on employability. The course offers an excellent grounding in knowledge of the key aspects of business management and finance that are covered by a range of modules from the Management and Marketing subject area. In turn, the degree seeks to inculcate in students many of the skills and competences in research, presentation, critical analysis, problem solving, team building and entrepreneurship, which all together should be helpful for future employment opportunities.

Modules

Students will study for four years with two semesters in each year. In the Foundation Year, students will take 3 modules in each semester, giving a total of 120 credits per year. In Years 1 and 2, students will study three modules in each semester, making a total of 120 credits per year. In Year 3 students will study one 40 credit module over 2 semesters and another 2 modules in each semester. Students may take an internship in the summer break before they enter their final year.

Assessment methods

Assessment is designed to meet the programme and module learning outcomes both academically and professionally in formative form including the preparation and feedback from seminars, workshops, tests and presentations, as well as in summative assessment that contributes to the grade, including assignment, group work/studies, project and exam. In particular, as is usual in the sector, this programme involve a considerable amount of group work and group assessment, i.e., as much as 25% of the assessment takes this form.
