A-levels should include History, or Classics - Ancient History, or Classics - Classical Civilisation, or Medieval History at grade B.

The University will not necessarily make conditional offers to all Access candidates but will continue to assess them on an individual basis. If we make you an offer, you will need to obtain/pass the overall Access to Higher Education Diploma and may also be required to obtain a proportion of the total level 3 credits and/or credits in particular subjects at merit grade or above.

GCSE/National 4/National 5

Applicants should have a grade B or 6 GCSE (or other suitable equivalent qualification) in a second language.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme

Applicants should have either an overall grade of 34 or 15 points at higher level. This should include: History HL at 5 or SL at 6.

The University will consider applicants holding BTEC National Diploma and National Extended Diploma Qualifications (QCF; NQF; OCR) on a case-by-case basis. Please contact us for further advice on your individual circumstances. A typical offer would be to achieve Distinction, Merit plus an A-level in History, or Classics - Ancient History, or Classics - Classical Civilisation, or Medieval History at grade B.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

History is a very popular subject (although numbers have fallen of late) — in 2015, over 10,000 UK students graduated in a history-related course. Obviously, there aren't 11,000 jobs as historians available every year, but history is a good, flexible degree that allows graduates to go into a wide range of different jobs, and consequently history graduates have an unemployment rate comparable to the national graduate average. Many — probably most — jobs for graduates don't ask for a particular degree to go into them and history graduates are well set to take advantage. That's why so many go into jobs in the finance industry, human resources, marketing, PR and events management, as well as the more obvious roles in education, welfare and the arts. Around one in five history graduates went into further study last year. History and teaching were the most popular further study subjects for history graduates, but law, journalism, and politics were also popular postgraduate courses.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

This is one of the less common modern languages for students to take, but graduates from Italian courses have a lot of options available to them when they complete their degrees. About one in five graduates from 2015 got jobs overseas — often as English teachers — which is much higher than for most subjects, and higher than previous years. Nearly half of the rest went to work in London. Those who want to stay at home to work usually find jobs anywhere where good communication skills are a must — and in 2015, that included education, marketing and finance. But remember — whilst employers say they rate graduates who have more than one language, you need to have them as part of a whole package of good skills.
