Sports coaching

**Learn to apply theoretical knowledge to high-level coaching. You'll work with professional teams and athletes in facilities like our Health and Human Performance Lab.**

This course is for anyone wanting to begin a career in coaching people across all ages and abilities as well as those interested in teaching physical education.

- Learn from practical experience as a sports coach on professional placements and work towards National Governing Body of Sport coaching awards.

- Access the latest technology in our upgraded £16-million sport and exercise facilities.

- 95% of students are in work or further study six months after graduating (UK domicile full-time first degree leavers; Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education survey, for the academic year 2016/17 published by the Higher Education Statistics Agency 2018).

- Gain an industry advantage by having free exposure to the latest wearable technology that uses GPS and micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) in the sports performance world through our partnership with Catapult Sports.*

Our links with local authority sports development units (and other organisations) open up opportunities for work experience, coaching education courses, workshops and events. You’ll learn from tutors who've collaborated with the likes of FIFA, the International Olympic Committee and the World Anti-Doping Agency. You'll work in facilities such as our Sports Rehabilitation Suite, Health and Human Performance Laboratory, Environmental Chamber, Performance Analysis Suite, and Exercise Physiology Laboratories. These are on top of our excellent indoor and outdoor sports facilities, which are currently undergoing a £16 million transformation.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

One of the fastest growing subjects in the country, the number of sports science graduates went from under 3,000 in 2003 to over 10,000 in 2013. Numbers have fallen slightly since 2015, but we still have over 9,000 graduates in the subject. However, the good news is the country's appetite for good health and fitness - and the adaptability of graduates in the subject - means that sports science grads are less likely than average to be out of work. Sports science graduates, not surprisingly, tend to get jobs in sport, fitness and health - coaching and teaching especially - but they're found all over the economy. Management and business are also popular options for graduates from this subject — and sports science graduates are particularly found where drive, determination and physical fitness are an advantage.
