If you love popular music and want to develop your songwriting or performing skills, or want to understand more about how popular music works, our Popular Music BMus (Hons) course is ideal. You will have the opportunity to work with commercially successful musicians who can help you build on your composing and production talents and youll benefit from the chance to make music in a lively student environment. Popular music is a highly competitive industry, but it can be extremely rewarding too, so well do all we can to help you on your way to a career. Well give you the opportunity to develop industry-standard practices and techniques that will help you unleash your creativity. You could also find yourself performing as a soloist or part of a group to gain experience and demonstrate your talents.During your studies well look at a wide range of topics from production and performance through to songwriter and composition. Well also look at popular music in its historical, global and cultural contexts. Youll be able to try ideas out in our state-of-the-art studios, which are equipped with the latest hardware and software. Youll be studying in a hive of creativity, working alongside aspiring classical and pop musicians, recording engineers, audio electronic experts and interface designers.

Option modules: Choose one from a list which may include: Technology for Music; Computer Composition 1 plus choose one from a list which may include: Solo Performance 1; Stylistic Composition; Grooves, Glitches and Crackles (Foundation Studies in Popular Music and Electronica). Year 2 Core modules: Popular Music Studies; Songwriting 2. Option modules: Choose up to four from a list which may include: Music for the Moving Image B; Scoring the Silver Screen: the Musicology of Film and Television; Experimental Music 1; Explorations in World Musics 1; Computer Composition 2; Solo Performance 2 (Minor); Performance Skills 2 (Major); Performance Skills 2 (Minor); Music in Educational Contexts. Year 3 - optional placement year. Final year Core modules: Research for Music; Work and Professional Practice in Music. What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

Music is a popular degree subject and a little over 4,600 degrees were awarded to UK graduates in 2015. Most were working after six months — but postgraduate study (usually continuing with music) is quite common and a lot of graduates go into music teaching, often as freelance or travelling music teachers of particular instruments. Obviously, many music graduates get work as musicians as well, or work as sound recordists and in similar technical roles. Music is important in advertising and so a lot of graduates go into this industry, and management is also a popular job role for music graduates. There's also a niche for music graduates wanting to work in IT and computing, particularly with web applications. Because a lot of musician work is temporary or freelance, the most common way for new graduates to get jobs as musicians is through their own contacts, so learning how to make good use of networks and contacts might help in your career.
