Perhaps you’ve always wondered what it would be like to get involved in a real crime-scene investigation. Or maybe you’re intrigued by how science can be applied to support the legal system. On this course accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry, you’ll get the chance to see chemistry in action and build a broad range of skills that’ll stand you in good stead for a science-sector career.

A key part of your time on the Chemistry with Forensic Science BSc(Hons) will be spent getting hands-on experience. We know employers are looking for graduates to hit the ground running when they start work, that’s why we’ve designed the course as much as possible around practical experiments. In our modern labs, you’ll get to grips with a whole range of instruments with the aim of becoming skilled in chemical and forensic analysis. Techniques you could have the chance to try out include spot tests for blood, drugs and firearm residues, identifying glass and paint fragments and examining microscopic hairs and fibres.

Building on the solid foundations you’ll get from your Chemistry and Forensics modules, we’ll also give you the chance to spend a year in industry or research in Year 3. Not only is a placement year a golden opportunity to put your knowledge into practice, it could also help give that all important boost to your employability when you graduate.

Modules

Year 1 - Core modules: Inorganic Chemistry 1; Organic Chemistry 1; Physical Chemistry 1; Inorganic Chemistry 2; Physical Chemistry 2; Practical Forensic Science 2; Crime Scene Investigation. Year 3 - optional placement year Supervised Work Experience - this optional placement year gives you the opportunity to experience employment within an organisation related to your chosen course. The placement is usually 48 weeks in duration. Placements may be available both within the UK and abroad. Final year - Core modules: Chemistry Project - Experimental Design; Advanced Chemistry Practical; Organic Chemistry 3; Physical Chemistry 3; Advanced Forensic Biology and Toxicology; Forensic Science and the Law.

Assessment methods

Assessment will include written exams, problem solving exercises, assessment of laboratory skills, multiple choice questions (mainly in your first year), oral and poster presentations and written reports.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

The statistics here primarily reflect the prospects for forensic science graduates - they make up over three quarters of the group. While there are not a lot of jobs available in forensics itself just at the moment, reflected in the overall unemployment rates for forensic science graduates, there are still jobs for graduates from these subjects as they learn useful analysis techniques that some employers can find in short supply. Last year's graduates went into analysis work in labs, technician roles and general research, and for those looking a little wider, business roles and management also employed forensics graduates. Some graduates join the police with this degree and that can be a good source of sponsorship and work experience.

Chemistry graduates are in demand from a wide range of industries, from the food, oil, chemicals and pharmaceuticals to consultancy, technical analysis and teaching. They're also prized by business and finance employers for their research and data handling skills — anywhere there is research and data to be explained, you can find chemistry grads. If you want a career in research, you need a doctorate, so start planning now if you fancy one of these exciting and challenging jobs - but good students can usually get grants to take a doctorate, so don't worry about the financing if you think you have what it takes.
