GEOGRAPHY:- is the study of the surface of the Earth as the site of human living and working. It considers the variability in physical and human landscapes, along with the interrelationships binding them together. Our Honours programme is highly flexible and is a combination of core and optional courses. This allows you to tailor your option choices towards a wide range of potential careers. STATISTICS:- is the science of collecting, analysing, presenting and interpreting data. 94% BSc Statistics students thought staff were good at explaining things. What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

There are two options for geography studies: the one we're talking about here is physical geography (there is also an option for geography courses with a more human or social steer). Like a lot of sciences, quite a few graduates in physical geography — about one in five — go on to further study, mainly for one-year Masters courses, and not just in geography, but in environmental sciences, conservation and in courses where we don't have enough graduates like planning and surveying. And in the world of work, graduates often go into environment, surveying and heritage work - and teaching. These are well-rounded degrees that help graduates get a range of useful skills and so careers such as marketing, business analysis, sports and management are also popular and it's often easy to convert or retrain once you have a geography degree.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

The business and research sectors worry that the UK hasn't got enough people with good statistics skills, and as stats are at the heart of so much of the economy, and we only have a few hundred graduates a year in the discipline, this type of degree can be very useful and versatile. The finance industry is very popular with this group, and they're far more likely to be working in London than most other graduates. And who can blame them — statistics graduates starting work in London were earning an average of nearly £29k just six months after leaving university. There is also demand from the Scottish finance sector in Edinburgh and Glasgow - particularly in banking and insurance. But a good statistician can find work almost anywhere that data can be analysed - which, in an online world, is almost anywhere - and many industries struggle to find enough statisticians to fulfil demand, so stay flexible and you can find a variety of options.
