We will consider science based Access to Higher Education Diplomas. Advice can be provided on an individual basis.

Including Higher Level Biology or Mathematics grade 5, plus Standard Level Mathematics or Maths Studies grade 4, if not taken at Higher Level. We are also happy to consider a combination of separate IB Diploma Programmes at both Higher and Standard Level. Please note that Maths in the IB is not required if you have already achieved GCSE Maths at grade C/4 or above.

Entry requirements for students studying BTEC qualifications are dependent on subjects studied. Advice can be provided on an individual basis. The standard required is generally at Distinction level.

Genetics

Research into genetics and genomics has advanced our understanding of a wide range of topics including Alzheimer’s disease, schizophrenia, personalised medicine, and children’s numeracy and literacy learning. On our course you will study both genetics, at the level of a single gene or group of genes, and genomics, at the level of an organism’s entire genes – the genome. This allows you to gain an understanding of hereditary issues, the effects of variation and natural selection, how genes interact with each other, and the role of environmental influences. Your final year project allows you to contribute to this field, approaching unanswered scientific questions using state-of-the-art-techniques; popular topics have ranged from the genetics of cancer and regulation of the immune response, to population genomics and molecular evolution.

Only a few hundred people take genetics courses every year and graduates from these courses are amongst the most likely to go on to do a doctorate when they graduate, as that's the level of qualification you need to go into a career in research in this important and fast-moving field. Lab jobs were the most popular outcome for genetics graduates, but whilst other science and technical occupations were also common, you could also find genetics graduates in a range of other roles, particularly business and finance.
