Studying French at the University of Edinburgh provides you with an excellent understanding of the language, literature and culture of the Francophone world and enables you to communicate effortlessly in the language. You will be offered a vast range of option courses as you progress through your programme (from Year 2 onwards). We offer up to 20 options in Year 4, including courses such as Literature and Film: the Challenge of Adaptation, Francophone Postcolonial Thought, Freud in France, Contemporary French Crime Fiction, The Monster in French Literature, The Modern City: Paris and Exploring Belgian Identities. Our high-quality resources and expert teaching staff offer you a very supportive learning environment. In addition to our extensive web resources, you will have access to the National Library of Scotland's French collections, one of the best in the UK, and our Main Library's extensive collection of books, journals and electronic resources. You will be able to join the French theatre group or the debating group and to take part in the French Film Club.
We have close links with the French Institute in Edinburgh. We organise joint events throughout the year, such as the Journée de la Francophonie and guest speakers. In QS World University rankings by Subject 2016, modern languages at Edinburgh was rated 4th in the UK and 17th in the world. In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF), 70 per cent of our European languages and cultures research was rated world-leading or internationally excellent, in a joint submission with Celtic and Scottish Studies.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

It's often said the UK doesn't produce enough modern language graduates, and graduates from French courses have a lot of options available to them when they complete their courses. About one in five working graduates from 2015 got jobs overseas — often as English teachers — which is much higher than for most subjects. Those who want to stay at home to work find jobs in education, and anywhere where good communication skills are a must. That means you can find French graduates in education, in marketing, in the arts and in business and finance as teachers, writers, personnel officers, financial advisors, analysts, sales people and marketers. But remember — whilst employers say they rate graduates who have more than one language, you need to have them as part of a whole package of good skills.
