Study the policy, practice, participation and promotion of physical education, physical activity and sport, both within and beyond the core curriculum. This is a multidisciplinary programme that integrates theory, research and practice. You will be able to tailor your course to your interests, ensuring you graduate ready for a range of careers and postgraduate study opportunities.

We have a high ratio of academic staff to students, and throughout your studies you will benefit from our small-group teaching, which is designed to encourage interaction between lecturers and students. You will be supported by our experienced staff, renowned for their excellence in teaching and research.

You will also be able to gain hands-on experience, applying all you have learned and acquiring additional practical skills. You will spend much of your time in the Sportspark, one of the finest sports complexes in Britain, boasting world-class facilities right here on UEA’s campus.

Core modules will enhance your understanding of physical education and sport research and the factors that influence individuals within physical education, sport and physical activity settings. You can then explore and appraise more complex issues across a range of disciplines, thanks to our flexible module options. You can tailor your choices to suit your interests and career aspirations, whether they are in teaching, coaching, sport development or physical activity and health.

In your final year you will complete a dissertation under the supervision of a research-active member of staff.

Enhance your studies by spending a year abroad. You will spend your third year abroad at one of our partner universities before returning to UEA for your final year. While you are away you will be encouraged to take modules that relate to your personal interests and future career goals. These may be in physical education or related disciplines. A year abroad is a unique, fulfilling experience that will help you develop skills coveted by employers. We have more than 160 partner universities around the world.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

One of the fastest growing subjects in the country, the number of sports science graduates went from under 3,000 in 2003 to over 10,000 in 2013. Numbers have fallen slightly since 2015, but we still have over 9,000 graduates in the subject. However, the good news is the country's appetite for good health and fitness - and the adaptability of graduates in the subject - means that sports science grads are less likely than average to be out of work. Sports science graduates, not surprisingly, tend to get jobs in sport, fitness and health - coaching and teaching especially - but they're found all over the economy. Management and business are also popular options for graduates from this subject — and sports science graduates are particularly found where drive, determination and physical fitness are an advantage.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

When you look at employment stats, bear in mind that a lot of students are already working in education when they take this type of course and are studying to help their career development. This means they already have jobs when they start their course, and a lot of graduates continue to study, whilst working, when they complete their courses. If your course is focused on nursery or early years education, a lot of these graduates go into nursery work or classroom or education assistant jobs; these jobs are not currently classed as 'graduate level' in the stats (although they may well be in the future as classifications catch up with changes in the way we work), and many graduates who enter these roles say that a degree was necessary.
