Textile design

Textile design is a multidisciplinary course that fully integrates theory with practice through the medium of textiles.

Textile design at Dundee offers you the opportunity to investigate textile design in a broad sense. We will encourage you to consider both the practical and relevant way society uses textiles.

You will learn and develop visual and practical skills. You will do this through making and exploring a diverse range of materials. The course will expose you to cutting edge technologies. These will enhance your making processes. This will help you to build excellent technical, sensory and aesthetic knowledge. Applying this to colour, structure, pattern and texture in your work.

We develop students who, through a range of applications, can contextualise practical knowledge and the decorative philosophy that is inherent within textile design. This includes developing innovative design ideas and prototypes for industry. It also involves exploring the ways that practical knowledge can help solve problems such as sustainability, the ageing population and crime.

Textiles are synonymous with domesticity and the body, but we will encourage you to look at them in the broadest sense. You will be actively encouraged to challenge perceived definitions within these traditional parameters and beyond.

Want to work in a growing, creative sector where we are a world leader? Welcome to design! The UK has a proud reputation as a centre of design excellence, and last year just over 14,000 design degrees were awarded. At the moment, the jobs market looks a little better for fashion and textile designers, and not as good for multimedia or interactive designers — but that may change by the time you graduate. In general, design graduates are more likely than most to start their career in London, although that also varies by subject — last year fashion designers often found jobs in the North West, graphic designers in the South West, illustrators in the South West, East Anglia and Midlands, textile designers in the Midlands and the North West, and visual designers in Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Midlands. Design is also a good degree for people who want to work for a small business - more than half of graduates start at a small employer.
