Your offer will be based on your predicted grades from your core A2s (full A levels), BTEC Diploma etc. We will accept up to 16 points towards the total from level 3 qualifications such as AS (where those AS levels are not taken on to A2 level), the Extended Project, or Music qualifications.  We usually consider an A Level in General Studies as a supplementary qualification. A good application/performance will be taken into account if you do not meet the criteria / offer.

Textile design

Learn to design and develop unique, imaginative fabrics for fashion, interiors and decorative surfaces, on one of the country’s top textile design degrees. You will be challenged, encouraged and celebrated.

**Why choose this course?**
Our students have scooped awards from New Designers, Selvedge and others, and have had work selected for the Ratti Foundation (Milan) and Texprint. We cover three creative areas – print, knit and weave – and teach you traditional making skills as well as new technology-based methods, so you can explore and experiment.

**Is this course for you?**
Could you develop textile work that startles or surprises? Are you ready to take risks, be imaginative and learn from your failures? If so, then you belong at Derby School of Arts.

**How will you learn?**
There’s a varied programme of learning, including projects, lectures, tutorials, debates, competitions, field visits, technical demonstrations and practical workshops. In your final year, there is a European fieldtrip – often, we go to Premiere Vision, Paris (a global fabric trade fair.)

**Opportunities and experiences**
You and your work will be highly visible because we enter national competitions and organise ‘live projects’: genuine work for clients. These can lead to excellent internships and summer placements. For example, a recent student spent her summer employed as a design intern by Sophie Steller Studio in London.

**Careers and employability**
Textile Design will prepare you for an exciting career in printed, knitted or woven textiles, working as a designer, buyer, merchandiser, stylist or illustrator. Previous students have gone on to hold design positions at Stephen and David Walters, Cristal Martin, Donna Karan and Boden. Another graduate founded Artsthread, the largest student global website, and continues to support our students.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

Want to work in a growing, creative sector where we are a world leader? Welcome to design! The UK has a proud reputation as a centre of design excellence, and last year just over 14,000 design degrees were awarded. At the moment, the jobs market looks a little better for fashion and textile designers, and not as good for multimedia or interactive designers — but that may change by the time you graduate. In general, design graduates are more likely than most to start their career in London, although that also varies by subject — last year fashion designers often found jobs in the North West, graphic designers in the South West, illustrators in the South West, East Anglia and Midlands, textile designers in the Midlands and the North West, and visual designers in Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Midlands. Design is also a good degree for people who want to work for a small business - more than half of graduates start at a small employer.
