WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?Media and Communication has a really interesting range of modules such as Researching the Audience, Multimedia Skills, News Culture and the Public Sphere, Digital Games and Gamification, and PR and Social Media. There are hands-on projects in publishing, journalism and writing for the web, print media or the screen. Our strong links with employers such as independent film producers, radio stations and newspapers can help you gain vital work experience and theres even an option to study for a semester in America. IS THIS COURSE FOR YOU?If youre looking for a media and communication degree that will help you understand all areas of the industry, give you practical and transferable skills, and encourage you to think creatively, this is for you. HOW YOU WILL LEARNThere will be formal lectures, seminars, tutorials, group exercises, workshops, debates, screenings and hands-on projects in areas like publishing, journalism and web writing. OPPORTUNITIES AND EXPERIENCESDerby has a good number of creative media companies who are eager to take students on internships or placements. And unlike other larger cities, like London or Nottingham, there is less competition for these opportunities. We also hold regular careers talks which enable you to network and build up your contacts in the industry.CAREERS AND EMPLOYABILITYMedia and Communication graduates go on to work in a wide range of professions including PR, communications, marketing, TV research, film and TV production, film archiving, radio presenting, radio production and journalism. Others have used their degree for higher level entry into, for example, the Civil Service, charity management, customer services, postgraduate study and teaching.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

The UK has a world-class media industry in film, print and broadcast media, worth billions to the economy, and employing thousands of new graduates every year, so it's hardly surprising that ambitious and talented graduates want to work in it. But be realistic — this is a highly-sought after industry and jobs are amongst the most competitive around. If you want to be a star in front of the camera or in print, you might want to look at other options. Media studies graduates are much the most likely graduates to get into the media industry (in 2015, one in five grads entering the film industry, and one in four getting jobs in TV or film production had a media studies degree) and they’re more likely to be in crucial roles directing, producing, or operating sound or video equipment, or in media research or marketing roles. Self-employment and freelancing is more common than for most degrees, so that may be something to prepare for.
