Sports and sporting events play a central role in society, breaking down barriers and uniting people. As well as the human aspects of sporting endeavour, engineering is an important and growing element in almost all sports. Improving performance and enhancing enjoyment, sports engineering is a programme applying engineering principles to an extremely diverse range of sporting activities. To design and analyse the performance of sporting equipment requires mechanical engineering, electronic engineering, materials science, product-design and sports science. Chichesters Sports Engineering degree recognises this need for wide knowledge and skills and runs interdisciplinary design-build-test projects, allowing sports engineering students to work with other engineering, science and design students to provide a wide exposure to knowledge and skills. Sports Engineering BEng. (Hons) at Chichester aims to provide the student with the scientific foundations, practical skills and techniques to enable them to make a constructive contribution to the world, by designing, building and using sporting equipment. Sports Engineering is an applied subject and the course is based around applied workshop learning; seminars with demonstrations; practical and lab work and design-build challenges.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

Graduates are in significant demand, so unemployment rates are well below the national graduate average and starting salaries are well above average. Much the most common industries for these graduates are now vehicle manufacture - there are not enough people with these degrees to go round and so the big employers tend to take the lion's share at the moment. But pretty much anywhere there is manufacturing, there are production engineers. Bear in mind that a lot of courses are four years long, and lead to an MEng qualification — this is necessary if you want to become a Chartered Engineer.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

One of the fastest growing subjects in the country, the number of sports science graduates went from under 3,000 in 2003 to over 10,000 in 2013. Numbers have fallen slightly since 2015, but we still have over 9,000 graduates in the subject. However, the good news is the country's appetite for good health and fitness - and the adaptability of graduates in the subject - means that sports science grads are less likely than average to be out of work. Sports science graduates, not surprisingly, tend to get jobs in sport, fitness and health - coaching and teaching especially - but they're found all over the economy. Management and business are also popular options for graduates from this subject — and sports science graduates are particularly found where drive, determination and physical fitness are an advantage.
