Teaching takes place at the Parkgate Road Campus.
The Creative Writing course gives you the opportunity to develop the skills and techniques to become a creative writer in poetry, drama and fiction (flashes, short stories, novels), and also to write critically. You will learn how your own work fits into the wider world of literature and contemporary publishing. In addition, the study and practice of Creative Writing enables you to develop a number of transferable skills that are highly relevant to many different areas of employment.
Over three years of the English Literature course you will study a variety of texts from the earliest times to the present day. Through the study of stimulating texts you will develop a range of core skills which will be relevant after graduation to many different roles and employment opportunities.

Assessment methods

For Creative Writing, assessment varies from module to module: you will compile portfolios of creative writing; write critical and factual prose; and also do a range of other kinds of assessed work. There are no formal written exams in Creative Writing.
For English Literature, assessment methods vary, and may include: coursework essays, seminar papers, oral presentations, resource-based learning exercises, portfolios, learning diaries, and a small number of formal examinations.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

The jobs market for this subject - which includes creative writing and scriptwriting courses - is not currently one of the strongest, so unemployment rates are currently looking quite high overall, with salaries on the lower side. But nevertheless, most graduates get jobs quickly. Graduates often go into careers as authors and writers and are also found in other roles where the ability to write well is prized, such as journalism, translation, teaching and advertising and in web content. Be aware that freelancing and self-employment is common is common in the arts, as are what is termed 'portfolio careers', having several part-time jobs or commissions at once - although graduates from this subject were a little more likely than many other creative arts graduates to be in conventional full time permanent contracts, so that might be worth bearing in mind.
