Course description

Archaeology is the study of the human past, from the hunter-gatherers of Ice Age Europe to the inhabitants of modern cities. At Chester, our course provides you with an understanding of the nature of these past societies and the techniques that we use to study them. The course aims to provide you with a wide range of skills, such as field survey and excavation, critical reading and writing, and scientific analysis; and you may have the opportunity to specialise in particular periods or themes. Teaching takes place at the Parkgate Road campus.

Modules

Level 1: Introductory modules outlining the historical and archaeological shaping of Britain and assessing the role of the heritage industry in this field; other modules introduce theories, methods and techniques of archaeology, exploring the skills required of an archaeologist and incorporating some practical and fieldwork elements; modules which may also be available include: prehistoric Britain; the shaping of Britain; skills for archaeology; archaeological practice; the pursuit of heritage. Level 2: Modules include: The Celts; Britain in the 1st millennium AD; Britain in the 2nd millennium AD; methods and theories of archaeology. Level 3: Modules include: the archaeology of towns; the archaeology of material culture; archaeology and contemporary society; geomatics; the Romans at home and abroad; plus dissertation.

There don't tend to be many archaeology undergraduates out there (just over 800 graduated in 2012) but it's quite a popular subject at postgraduate level. In fact, over a quarter of archaeology graduates take some kind of further study when they graduate. When you look at the stats, be aware that junior jobs in archaeology are not always well paid at the start of your career, and that temporary contracts or even unpaid work are not uncommon. The archaeology graduates of 2012 found jobs in management and heritage and environment work, as well as more conventional graduate jobs in business and the finance industry.
