Teaching english as a foreign language

Whether you are a beginner or you have an A Level in your chosen language, you'll find the combination of a foreign language and teaching English a stimulating and career-enhancing degree option. You'll also gain classroom teaching experience and have the opportunity to achieve an academic and internationally recognised professional qualification. The course develops confidence, organisational, analytical and people skills along with cultural awareness and aims to consolidate and strengthen your existing knowledge of grammar and expression.

Features of your course environment includes: teaching practice with genuine language learners from all over the world. A research active environment with direct relevance and impact. Rosetta Stone language learning courses complement studies and a year abroad.

The course includes a variety of assessment developing the knowledge and skills required to compete in the workplace: essays; portfolios; teaching journals; observing experienced and qualified practitioners at work; timed tests; live teaching practice; presentations; case studies; material and language test development.

Facilities include: Worldwise Learning Centre with international TV channels and open plan self-study areas; modern classrooms and language learning resources Digital Conference; and Interpreting and Translation Suites.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

It's often said the UK doesn't produce enough modern language graduates, and graduates from German courses have a lot of options available to them when they complete their courses. The unemployment rates last year was lower than graduates in general. Nearly a quarter of working graduates from 2015 got jobs outside the UK — mostly as English teachers — which is much higher than for most subjects. The relative strength of the German economy means there will continue to be opportunities there in the future. But more graduates went to work in London, and those who want to stay at home to work find jobs anywhere where good communication skills are a must, particularly in education, in marketing, in the arts and in business and finance as teachers, writers, personnel officers, financial advisors, analysts, sales people and marketers.. But remember — whilst employers say they rate graduates who have more than one language, you need to have them as part of a whole package of good skills.

The stats above mainly cover teaching degrees for training and qualifying in primary school education. These tend to be three or four-year courses — check with course tutors about how long you will need to study to get your Qualified Teacher Status. Most graduates go into teaching roles — usually primary school teaching, so these courses have good employment rates and starting salaries.
