Foundation Entry degree courses are designed for students who have the ability to study for a degree, but don’t have the necessary formal qualifications to enter directly onto their chosen Honours degree programme. This course will give you an insight into the practice of journalism and a basic grounding in the skills and knowledge required by journalists if you don’t have traditional qualifications – life experience as well as a keen interest in news and current affairs is what counts. As well as giving you a broad-based journalism education, you will develop both intellectually and personally. The course serves as the first year to any of our journalism degree courses and is designed to prepare you for careers in modern digitalised newsrooms and to allow you to work in a range of media.

Our growing global community of graduates is spread around the world, working in TV, radio, print and digital news. They work for China’s top news agency Xinhua, the Times of India, the South China Morning Post and many other prestigious news outlets. Others move on to postgraduate study, film-making, photography and business.

Year 3: The Professional Journalist 2 (International), World Desk 1, Issues in International Journalism. Plus two options from: Global Reporting, The Business of Journalism, Controversies in Journalism, Data Journalism, Photojournalism (20 credits), Music Journalism (20 credits), Free-choice elective

Year 4: EITHER World Desk 2 AND/OR Dissertation, AND/OR The Media Entrepreneur. Options: Work Placement, Reporting Politics and Society, Future Media, Constructive Journalism, Specialist Journalism, Campaign Planning (marketing), Free-choice elective

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

Journalism roles are very sought after, and competition fierce, and with the Internet disrupting business models, this is likely to continue. It's not impossible to get into roles with a first degree — quite a few do - but they can often be insecure or on a freelance basis, and a lot of jobs in journalism go to postgraduates. Unpaid work is not the norm for new journalists, but it’s rather more common than for other roles, as personal contacts and work experience are important ways for would-be journalists to get their target jobs. The skills you can gain from a journalism degree can be useful in a range of industries, and so grads from these courses can be found in a wide range of jobs - first degree graduates often get jobs in marketing and PR where their skills at drafting copy to deadlines are appreciated. London tends to dominate the jobs market for journalism graduates - a quarter of journalism graduates went to work there - but 2015 graduates found opportunities elsewhere, particularly in larger cities with good local media.
