Economics

During your Foundation Entry Year you will study alongside peers from related courses, whilst you gain a broad introduction to the basics of business, alongside improving key skills needed for success at university, including numeracy, writing and IT skills. Your existing skills will be built on by providing subject specific skills, whilst introducing you to subjects taught within the Schools of Management and Business, in order that you may more easily choose your preferred course, following successful completion of the Foundation Year. You’ll study key business themes and develop the knowledge and skills required for a successful business career or for further study. We’ll provide a framework for you to develop an understanding of businesses, their processes, and the changing environment in which they operate. You’ll also prepare for and develop a business career while enhancing your lifelong learning skills and personal development.

Economics as a degree places emphasis on numerical and problem-solving skills. This is reflected in the destinations of economics graduates as almost half of those working full-time in the UK enter professions that fall within the category of business, finance and associate professions. Our graduates have pursued a wide variety of careers – market analysts, financial analysts, retail managers, entrepreneurs, civil servants and academics. The subject is recognised as an intellectually demanding preparation for a wide range of professional occupations requiring high levels of both literacy and numeracy.

Year 1: Managing Business Information (Year long), Skills for HE (Year long), Business in Context (Semester 1), Introduction to Enterprise Skills (Semester 1). Choose two from: Accounting and Economics (Semester 2), Managing People and Organisations (Semester 2), Marketing and Retail (Semester 2)

Year 2: common to all 3 routes: Introduction to Economics, Introduction to Applied Economics, Business Decision Modelling, Business Relationships, Accounting and Finance for Managers, Personal and Professional Development

Year 3: Intermediate Principles of Economics (BA/BSc Econ), Methodology and Diversity in Economics (BA/BSc Econ), Quantitative Business Modelling (BSc Econ), Global Environment of Business, Business Economics. Plus options including- Economics of the European Union, Social Economics, Business Strategy, European Economic Development.

Year 4: Economic Policy (BA/BSc Econ), Philosophical Themes in Economics (BA Econ), Market Modelling (BSc Economics), Business Statistics (BSc Economics), Strategic Management. Plus options including – Labour Market Economics, International Financial Economics, Europe and the World Economy, International Management, Public Sector Economics, Economics Dissertation

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

This is a degree in demand, as business increasingly needs workers who can examine and explain complex data. And yet the number of economics graduates fell by nearly 10% last year, which means demand is even greater. As so many economic grads go into banking and finance, it's not surprising that over half of all 2015's economics graduates who did go into work were working in London. And don't think it's just the finance industry that's interested in these graduates - there's a significant number who enter the IT industry to work with data as analysts and consultants. It's quite common for economics graduates to go into jobs such as accountancy and management consultancy which may require you to take more training and gain professional qualifications - so don’t assume you won’t have to take any more exams once you leave uni. And the incentive to take them, of course, is better pay, which will be on top of an already healthy average starting salary of over £30,000 for graduates working in the capital.
