About this course

This is one of the best paths into the accounting profession and combines a rigorous academic programme with technical training. Accounting and Finance at UCLan has accreditation from a number of prestigious professional bodies, including the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). You’ll develop your intellectual capacity, analytical skills and have a strong knowledge and understanding of accounting, enabling you to work in audit, tax and accountancy businesses as well as in financial functions within other organisations.
Put theory into practice in a professional business environment by taking advantage of the optional 48-week industry paid placement in a company based in the UK or overseas. You will also have the option to study a semester/year abroad or take your second year at our Cyprus campus. We also offer an International Travel Bursary Fund paying for you to take part in week-long international visits. Undertaking a placement year is invaluable and provides a practical introduction to business which will benefit you upon your return to study and also increase your employability upon graduation.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?You don't have to be an accountant if you take this degree, but over half of graduates take a look at the rewards on offer for accountancy trainees and go into the job. Many others go into other parts of the finance industry as advisors or book-keepers, and some go into management or marketing. London is very popular for accountancy graduates going into their first job, but it's also quite common to work in Scotland, with Glasgow a perennial hotbed of Scottish accountancy recruitment. If you want to find a job in finance as an accountancy graduates, recruitment agencies were particularly important last year, so try to get in touch with one as soon as you can to improve your chances.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?Over 2,000 students graduated with a degree in finance in 2015, and a sign of the strength of the finance industry, numbers are on the up. Over half of finance graduates go into the finance industry, with accountancy and financial advice roles particularly popular. It's also quite common for finance graduates to go into jobs which require you to take more training and gain professional qualifications — finance graduates who take further study are more likely to be studying accountancy than finance. About a third of graduates start their careers in London - but Glasgow, Manchester and Birmingham are other popular locations for finance graduates to work.
