Theology and religious studies

Our religion and theology degree will enable you to understand and explain the ways in which religion significantly shapes the world. This course offers a rare opportunity to study the subject at home and abroad.

Year one provides a solid foundation in religion’s complex interaction with the modern world. Subsequent years allow you more flexibility to shape your degree to suit your interests.

In years one and two you take units covering issues and approaches to the study of world religions. You will be offered optional units on various aspects of Buddhism, Christian history and theology, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism and Chinese and Japanese religions. You can also choose to study one of the following languages: Chinese, Greek, Hebrew, Japanese, Latin or Sanskrit.

After successfully completing years one and two, you will have the opportunity to spend your third year abroad at one of our partner universities. We currently have partnerships with institutions in Asia, Australia, Canada, the US and continental Europe. During your fourth year you will explore the theme of comparative religions and take optional units that enable you to focus on a theme or pursue broader issues. You will delve into the subject by producing a dissertation.

Our welcoming classroom environment enables you to interact closely with lecturers. Tutors employ a variety of teaching styles, ranging from small-group sessions to larger lecture units.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

Theology can actually be a very vocational subject —by far the most common move for theology graduates is to go into the clergy and at the moment we have a serious shortage of people willing to go into what is one of the oldest graduate careers. If you want to study theology but don't want to follow a religious career, then there are plenty of options available. 2015 graduates went into all sorts of jobs requiring a degree, from education and community work, to marketing, HR and financial analysis. Postgraduate study is also popular — a lot of theology graduates train as teachers, or go into Masters or even doctoral study - where philosophy and law are very popular postgraduate subjects of study.
