You will study topics such as asset pricing, corporate finance, financial management, financial reporting, auditing, international finance, management accounting and taxation, as well as other units offered within the school.In the first year you will gain skills across the core disciplines of accounting, economics, finance and mathematics before pursuing more specialised units as your interests develop.In year two you will learn more advanced theory and techniques and study financial accounting, management accounting and corporate finance in more depth. We will teach you how to analyse data from quantitative models and you will choose two optional units. Many students choose Taxation and Foundations of Business Law as their options, which attract exemptions from professional examinations.In your final year you will study financial markets and advanced corporate finance, plus five units from a selection of options. These options are mainly from within the School of Economics, Finance and Management or you may be able to choose a unit in law.If you wish to extend your degree to four years you may do so with:- a professional placement;- a year studying abroad in English or;- a year studying abroad in a foreign language.To take advantage of one of these opportunities you should usually apply through UCAS to BSc Accounting and Finance (NN43) then, during your studies, ask to be considered for:- BSc Accounting and Finance with Professional Placement- BSc Accounting and Finance with Study Abroad (for study in English)- BSc Accounting and Finance with Study in Continental Europe (for study in French, German, Italian or Spanish).All of these degrees include an additional year between your second and final years. Allocation of places is merit based, depending on your first year examination results. Note that direct year-one entry via UCAS is available for BSc Accounting and Finance with Study in Continental Europe (NN34); entry to the other four-year programmes is by transfer from BSc Accounting and Finance (NN43).

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

You don't have to be an accountant if you take this degree, but over half of graduates take a look at the rewards on offer for accountancy trainees and go into the job. Many others go into other parts of the finance industry as advisors or book-keepers, and some go into management or marketing. London is very popular for accountancy graduates going into their first job, but it's also quite common to work in Scotland, with Glasgow a perennial hotbed of Scottish accountancy recruitment. If you want to find a job in finance as an accountancy graduates, recruitment agencies were particularly important last year, so try to get in touch with one as soon as you can to improve your chances.

Over 2,000 students graduated with a degree in finance in 2015, and a sign of the strength of the finance industry, numbers are on the up. Over half of finance graduates go into the finance industry, with accountancy and financial advice roles particularly popular. It's also quite common for finance graduates to go into jobs which require you to take more training and gain professional qualifications — finance graduates who take further study are more likely to be studying accountancy than finance. About a third of graduates start their careers in London - but Glasgow, Manchester and Birmingham are other popular locations for finance graduates to work.
