If you are creative and enjoy design, construction and management of the world we live in then civil engineering is for you. This degree will equip you to find solutions to environmental problems and to design large and unique structures, such as buildings, bridges, dams and coastal defences. The first two years of your degree will cover the basics of structures, mathematics, soil and fluid mechanics, computing and surveying, and include some optional units. You may transfer between the BEng and MEng in the first two years. In the third year we introduce more optional units, allowing you to pursue your interests while developing key professional skills. You will also undertake a major investigative research project. Design is central to the course and this is reflected in the projects you undertake throughout your degree. In the first year you will develop a solution to an open-ended problem by designing and making a model bridge. The second year includes steel work, reinforced concrete and geotechnical design. In the third year you design a complete water supply system and will undertake other design activities throughout the year. This degree is accredited by Joint Board of Moderators under licence from the UK regulator the Engineering Council. An accredited degree will provide you with some or all of the underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills required for eventual registration as an Incorporated (IEng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng).
