Our BSc (Hons) Mathematics and Secondary Education combines a firm grounding in pure mathematics, applied mathematics, numerical analysis and educational theory with practical teaching skills. It offers a fast-track route to a rewarding career teaching in secondary education, or the flexibility to choose one of many other careers open to skilled mathematicians.

There is a national shortage of mathematics teachers and mathematics graduates are popular with employers in industries across the economic spectrum – this course is designed to open doors to a multitude of careers. Our BSc (Hons) Mathematics and Secondary Education offers you a firm grounding in pure and applied mathematics, the skills needed to solve mathematical problems arising in real-life, and practical teaching skills that are grounded in theory. If you are looking to teach mathematics at Key Stages 3, 4 and 5 (11-18 years), this degree provides highly relevant knowledge and experience that should prove attractive to free schools, academies and independent schools.

During the first level of the course, our dedicated tutors will support you to consolidate and develop your knowledge of mathematics beyond A-level. You’ll also have the opportunity to gain valuable preparatory knowledge and understanding of the role of a teacher in secondary education. At the second level, you’ll focus on deepening your knowledge and understanding of mathematics and begin to develop your teaching skills via school-based experience.

At Honours-level, you’ll explore the key theories and techniques of teaching, learning and assessment. We’ll support you as you discover how to apply them in practice, and encourage you as you learn to plan lessons, deliver classes, assess your students’ performances and provide constructive feedback. Our supportive tutors will work to help you become an expert, engaging and inclusive mathematics teacher with high standards of professionalism.

Please note, that we are unable to recommend graduates of this degree for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), which is awarded by the UK government’s Department for Education (DfE). However, a range of educational establishments in England are not required to stipulate QTS as a condition of employment. These include independent schools, free schools, studio schools, academies and university technical colleges. With appropriate experience, you’ll be able to achieve QTS via the Assessment Only (AO) route. Alternatively, you could pursue QTS by undertaking one of the available graduate teacher training routes.

Want to feel needed? This is one of the most flexible degrees of all and with so much of modern work being based on data, there are options everywhere for maths graduates. With all that training in handling figures, it's hardly surprising that a lot of maths graduates go into well-paid jobs in the IT or finance industries, and last year, a maths graduate in London could expect a very respectable average starting salary of £27k. And we're always short of teachers in maths, so that is an excellent option for anyone wanting to help the next generation. And if you want a research job, you'll want a doctorate — and a really good maths doctorate will get you all sorts of interest from academia and finance — and might secure some of the highest salaries going for new leavers from university.
