Psychology explains why we fall in love, how drugs affect behaviour, why we sleep, how rational we are and how others influence us.

This British Psychological Society (BPS) accredited course covers major areas of psychology, including social, developmental, cognitive and biological psychology and individual differences and offers the opportunity to specialise in your areas of interest.

This course is taught by nationally or internationally renowned academics, giving you an opportunity to learn about the new and exciting developments in psychological research. The development of employability skills that are embedded within the course provide you with the foundations to reach your potential for future postgraduate study and employment.

Modules

This is an integrated four-year degree, with the foundation year as a key part of the course. You will be required to pass the foundation year in order to progress to the first year of your chosen degree. During your Foundation Year you will study a range of subjects designed to prepare you for the final three years of your undergraduate degree course.

Integrated project that brings together all aspects of your Foundation Year and provides you with a chance to work on an independent piece of work.

Study major areas of psychology and choose from specialist units such as Applied Health Psychology, Coaching Psychology, Occupational and Organisational Psychology, Atypical Child and Adolescent Development: Theories and Applications, Psychology of Mental Health and Cognitive Neuropsychology

Assessment methods

You will be assessed in a variety of ways which are designed to suit a range of individual learning styles. Each assessment will provide the opportunity to offer you feedback to help with your development and inform the completion of your future assessments.

There will be an opportunity in each year of your study to develop and refine a number of key academic skills, many of which will be transferable to the workplace. These include team-working, report writing, oral presentations, constructing coherent written arguments, the ability to analyse, synthesise and evaluate complex information from a range of sources, reflective writing and personal and professional development planning.

Support is provided through staff office hours where you can discuss the progress of your project and any challenges that you may be encountering with staff as well as statistics drop-in sessions

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

20 years ago, this was a specialist degree for would-be psychologists but now it is the model of a modern, flexible degree subject. One of the UK's fastest-growing subject at degree level, and the second most popular subject overall (it recently overtook business studies), one in 23 of all graduates last year had psychology degrees. As you'd expect with figures like that, jobs in psychology itself are incredibly competitive, so to stand a chance of securing one, you need to get a postgraduate qualification (probably a doctorate in most fields, especially clinical psychology) and some relevant work experience. But even though there are so many psychology graduates — far more than there are jobs in psychology, and over 13,800 in total last year — this degree has a lower unemployment rate than average because its grads are so flexible and well-regarded by business and other industries across the economy. Everywhere there are good jobs in the UK economy, you'll find psychology graduates - and it's hardly surprising as the course helps you gain a mix of good people skills and excellent number and data handling skills. A psychology degree ticks most employers' boxes — but we'd suggest you don't drop your maths modules.
