Graphic design

Graphic design dominates our world from billboards to magazines, and from shop fronts to websites, its ubiquitous. This course recognises this fact, and acknowledges the explosion of possibilities that digital media has created for product sales, and for the production and global distribution of information. Featuring a 12-week placement with a local company in your second year, you will enjoy valuable opportunities to develop your design skills on live projects, and learn how they can be applied to national and international businesses.

A range of appropriate assessments will enable you to grow in confidence and demonstrate your acquisition of knowledge and skills. The formative and summative assessment methods used across the course include:

The following are examples of the various assessment methods used:
Coursework to include examples of Graphic Design, visual communication, live briefs, research portfolios, notebooks, research assignments, essays, contextual writing.
Assessments based on individual and group presentations.
Portfolio reviews are a key means of assessing but they are also important for collating work for a professional portfolio. This instills in students the right attitudes towards professional work whereby you can use your portfolio to promote yourself in professional contexts.
Essays and reports feature in developing students writing skills, helping you to express ideas in a variety of ways and styles and to develop academic writing skills that are of particular benefit in producing the final year contextual rationale for your major project.
A midpoint Formal Formative Assessment to review all work in progress.
Key Skills are embedded in the teaching and learning of the course and will be taken into account in all assessments

Assessments will develop incrementally across the course and allow you to gain skills, confidence and knowledge, receive feedback and develop, thus allowing you to implement this knowledge and feedback into subsequent assessments.

Weekly or bi-weekly `crits provide regular formative feedback to allow to develop your learning in an informed manner with clear direction from tutorial and group crit feedback and discussion. Crits offer a studio based, discursive opportunity for staff and students to discuss and evaluate work. The critique works in conjunction with PAL, PAT, PAD and tutorial processes. The term Crit describes `studio based formative or summative feedback in small or large group situations with students and lecturers

At the end of the course, completion of the assessments will demonstrate your ability to analyse current design practice in relation to Graphic Design - and communicate this, in both written and visual formats, as well as demonstrate a range of transferable skills relevant to your professional employability.

Want to work in a growing, creative sector where we are a world leader? Welcome to design! The UK has a proud reputation as a centre of design excellence, and last year just over 14,000 design degrees were awarded. At the moment, the jobs market looks a little better for fashion and textile designers, and not as good for multimedia or interactive designers — but that may change by the time you graduate. In general, design graduates are more likely than most to start their career in London, although that also varies by subject — last year fashion designers often found jobs in the North West, graphic designers in the South West, illustrators in the South West, East Anglia and Midlands, textile designers in the Midlands and the North West, and visual designers in Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Midlands. Design is also a good degree for people who want to work for a small business - more than half of graduates start at a small employer.
