A minimum of 3 A Levels at BBB - to include Mathematics and Physics. To be considered for entry into Second Year, a minimum of 3 A Levels at ABB, with AB from Mathematics and Physics (including the subject(s) nominated for Honours - an A in the subject for Single Honours or AB in the subjects for Joint Honours). Also required: GCSE at C or above in English or English Language, Mathematics and in either Chemistry, or Physics or Dual Award Science.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme

32

A minimum of 32 points, with a minimum of 5 points at HL required from 2 Mathematics and Physics. For Second Year entry: a minimum of 34 points with a minimum of 6 at HL in the subject(s) nominated for Honours. A minimum of Standard Level English and Maths also required.

Leaving Certificate - Higher Level (Ireland) (first awarded in 2017)

H2,H2,H2,H3,H3

A minimum of 5H with 3 at H2 AND 2 at H3 OR AABB including a minimum of BB from Mathematics and Physics. The grading within band B must be at B2 or above. O in English, Mathematics and in either Chemistry or Physics.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate (first teaching from September 2016)

A minimum of DDM with the main subjects being Mathematics and Physics. Also required: GCSE at C or above in English or English Language, Mathematics and in either Chemistry, or Physics or Dual Award Science.

This programme brings two hugely popular subjects together to help develop in-demand Geophysicists. Geology is the study of the Earth and how it works: its minerals, rocks, their structure and interactions above and below Earth's surface. It is also concerned with unraveling Earth history, including the history of life, and predicting future geologic events. Geophysics applies mathematics, the principles of physics, and modeling to study the Earths interior and investigates the Earths electromagnetic and gravitational fields.At first sight, these two subjects, may appear very different however they are not. A Geophysicist explores the same problems as a Geologist but by application of physical, numerical, and computer technology methods and particularly physics based techniques to the study of Earths interior and for the exploration of natural resources. If you have ever wondered how volcanoes or earthquakes happen, why Tyrannosaurus is extinct, why mountains form, how oil and gas forms and how to find and produce it, or how climate changes over time, ask a Geophysicist.

Assessment methods

Students are assessed by any combination of three assessment methods: coursework such as essays and reports completed throughout the course; practical assessments of the skills and competencies they learn on the course; and written examinations at the end of each course. The exact mix of these methods differs between subject areas, years of study and individual courses.

Honours projects are typically assessed on the basis of a written dissertation.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

The market for geologists is has been quite linked to the oil industry for some time now, and the drop in the price of oil has meant the industry has stopped recruiting as many people for the time being. Geologists are still in demand, though, so the main effect has been to reduce the opportunities - and salaries - for geologists working abroad. At home, the oil industry remains a big employer, and so are the mining, civil engineering, construction and consultancy industries, with geology graduates working as geologists, geophysicists, civil engineers and environmental professionals.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

Although the subject has seen a bit of resurgence in recent years, the UK is still felt to be short of physics graduates, and in particular physicists training as teachers. If you want a career in physics research — in all sorts of areas, from atmospheric physics to lasers - you'll probably need to take a doctorate, and so have a think about where you would like to do that and how you might fund it (the government funds many physics doctorates, so you might not find it as hard as you think). With that in mind, it's not surprising that just over a fifth of physics graduates go on to take doctorates when they finish their degree, and well over a third of physicists take some kind of postgraduate study in total. Physics is highly regarded and surprisingly versatile, which is why physics graduates who decide not to stay in education are more likely to go into well-paid jobs in the finance industry than they are to go into science. The demand and versatility of physics degrees goes to explain why they're amongst the best-paid science graduates.
