Course description

This degree provides the opportunity to specialise in the Danish, Norwegian or Swedish language, and to develop an in-depth appreciation of Scandinavian culture. You will have access to state-of-the-art language teaching facilities and the largest and oldest Scandinavian library in the UK, and will spend a year in a Scandinavian country.

Modules

Year 1: Basic/intermediate Danish, Swedish or Norwegian; introduction to linguistics and the Scandinavian languages; introduction to literary studies; histories and cultures of the Nordic region; introduction to old Norse; 1st year project. Year 2: Intermediate Danish, Swedish, Norwegian; introduction to Scandinavian literature; further courses from a wide selection of options in: literature; film; history/politics; Viking studies. Year 3: Spent abroad at a university in Scandinavia. Final year: Advanced Danish, Swedish or Norwegian; translation from the Scandinavian languages; further courses from a wide selection of options.
