Course description

This three-year programme offers a comprehensive education in mathematics along with the opportunity to achieve proficiency in two or more modern languages from a choice of Arabic, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, Spanish and possibly others. Graduates are equipped for careers that may take them to Europe or further afield.

Modules

Years 1 and 2: 6 courses are taken each year giving grounding in pure mathematics and mathematical methods, following the same courses as the single-subject mathematics students. In place of applied mathematics, students take 2 courses in European languages each year. Year 3: Range of options in both mathematics and language(s). Course does not currently involve a year's study in continental Europe; the Department is investigating this possibility for all students who are proficient in the appropriate language. 4 main European languages (French, German, Italian, Spanish) are available for study and all levels of competence can be catered for; it is sometimes possible to provide study in another European language and it is also possible to study a course leading to a qualification in TEFL.

The UK still doesn’t have as many maths teachers as we’d like, so anyone wanting to take maths and then go into teaching will be welcome. In fact, there’s felt to be a general lack of maths skills in the population at large, so this is one subject where there's demand for graduate skills. With all that training in handling figures, it's hardly surprising that a lot of maths graduates go into well-paid jobs in the IT or finance industries, and last year, a maths graduate in London could expect a very respectable average starting salary of £27k. But for research jobs, you'll want a doctorate – and a really good maths doctorate will get you all sorts of interest from academia and finance – and might secure salaries to match.
