This new degree aims to give students a strong foundation in the human body and disease along with an understanding of design and engineering principles. The purpose of this is to combine innovation and technology with patient care. Students will be taught to apply a systems approach to engineering-related developments in healthcare, academia and business centres. This programme intends to develop multi-skilled graduates equipped to meet a rapidly expanding need. Graduates will be able to work in areas such as designing artificial and regenerative body organs and tissues, keyhole and robotic surgery, innovating techniques for diagnosis and treatment of disease, quantifying physiological function, designing equipment for improved surgical techniques, prosthetic reconstruction and assistive technology, and treating patients needing corrective treatments due to malformation, disease, cancer or trauma.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

As a mixed subject within engineering where students get a chance to learn from a range of disciplines, this course isn't taken by as many people as some of the more specialist disciplines. Demand for engineering skills is high, though, and so unemployment rates are low and the average starting salary was a very healthy £26,400 for 2015 graduates. Graduates are able to specialise enough to be working in jobs in engineering — especially in design and development - as well as engineering project management. IT and management consultancy were some of the more common jobs outside engineering. Bear in mind that a lot of courses are four years long, and lead to a MEng qualification — this is necessary if you want to become a Chartered Engineer.

Medical degrees are some of the most difficult courses to enter, but very nearly all graduates go on to good, well-paid and secure careers in health. If you're taking a shorter pre-clinical course, you'll need to continue on to further medical training to complete an accredited qualification, which explains why a high proportion of those grads are 'in further study' six months later. And at the moment, the UK is short of doctors and we have upped the number of places available, so demand remains high.
